Five folded (octavo) text signatures, plus twelve pochoir prints, laid into portfolio of printed paper and cloth over boards, as issued. Prints in fine condition, with occasional tiny spots of foxing not affecting images. Text signatures uncut and in very good condition, with age toning and offsetting to first and last blank page. Portfolio lightly soiled, with mild bumps to corner and small tear to interior paper pastedown, still very good, with remnants of the original ribbon closures. Gerda Wegener (1886ñ1940) was a Danish illustrator and painter whose representations of women challenged norms of gender and sexuality. She married fellow artist Einar Wegener while still a student; after their relocation to Paris, Einar adopted the name and persona of Lili Erbe. Wegener often used Lili as a model. In 1930, Lili was one of the first people to undergo sex reassignment surgery; she died of complications from the surgery the next year. The couple's story became internationally known through the novel The Danish Girl (published in 2000, and translated into a dozen languages), and the 2015 film of the same name.The twelve stunning pochoir prints (after the original watercolors) in this portfolio were originally issued alone in 1917; apparently neither that issue nor a 1921 issue sold well. In 1925 the publisher paired them with the Perceau sonnets. Each print bears Wegener's trademark black harlequin mask in a corner of the image as a signature.

After moving to Paris in 1912, she became highly successful both as a painter and as illustrator for Vogue, La Vie Parisienne and Fantasio. Her work comes with a sensational backstory: Gerda's husband Einar, also a successful artist, posed as a model for many of her works dressed in women's clothing, and later underwent the world's first sex-change operation. The actress Alicia Vikander won an Oscar for her portrait of Gerda in the recent film adaptation of this story, Tom Hooper's The Danish Girl.

First edition thus, first printing, number 226 of 414 copies printed on velin d'arches paper, of a total print run of 500. The text is extracted from Casanova's memoirs describing his relationship with "M.M.", a nun from the convent at Murano. This edition is beautifully illustrated by Gerda Wegener, likely using her wife, Lili Elbe, as a model. Gerda Wegener (1886-1940) was a Danish artist working in art deco and art nouveau styles known for her eroticized depictions of women, her pioneering reconsideration of the female gaze in portraiture, and her stunningly decadent backgrounds which are well-exemplified here. In 1925 Wegener represented France at the world exhibition in Paris where she was awarded two gold and one bronze medals. Wegener was married to fellow artist Lili Elbe, having met at the Royal Danish Academy of Fine Arts in Copenhagen. The two lived in Paris from 1912 where Elbe was one of Wegener's most frequent models. Elbe is also known for being one of the first documented recipients of gender affirming surgery, and as the subject of the novel The Danish Girl by David Ebershoff, and 2015 film of the same name. 2 vols, quarto. Text in French. With 8 full-page colour etchings by Andre Lambert after Wegener's watercolours with tissue guards, and wood engraved headpieces, initials, and vignettes by G. Aubert printed in sepia after her designs. Original plain paper wrappers, titles to spines and front covers in black and red, edges untrimmed. With the original glassine wrappers. Slight chips to spine ends, gatherings a little fragile, a near-fine copy in the faintly toned glassine jackets.

Gerda Wegener, née Gottlieb (1886-1940), était une artiste peintre et dessinatrice danoise très en vogue à Paris et Copenhague dans les années 1910. 1930. Elle collabora avec plusieurs revues : La Vie parisienne, Fantasio, Rire, La Baïonnette etc. et illustra une dizaine de livres (spécialement pour les éditeurs Briffaut et Piazza), ouvrages aujourd'hui très recherchés. A sa propre notoriété s'ajouta celle de son mari, Einar Wegener, qui mena sous le nom Lili Elbe une vie de femme mondaine et d'artiste. Il devint d'ailleurs, après plusieurs opérations, la première femme transsexuelle connue de l'histoire médicale. Après leur séparation, Gerda Wegener conclut une seconde union qui fut de courte durée. Suite à ces échecs affectifs et face à la menace d'une guerre en Europe elle retourna au Danemark, mais tomba très vite dans l'oubli. Elle termina sa vie en dessinant des cartes postales pour subvenir à ses besoins. Papier bruni. Exemplaire non rogné, minimes accrocs dans les marges. Très bon exemplaire de ce fascicule fragile.
