Focusing on the treatment of speechlessness in early 19th century French, German and English literary and non-literary texts, it critically examines how the concept of interpretation undergoes a decisive epistemological turn after 1800. The hermeneutic program of making texts speak is shown to actually produce the speechlessness it set out to vanquish. "Gerd Gemündens lucid study of nineteenth-century "monsters" and "criminals" examines the monstrosity of a discourse that constructs its subjects only to imprison them.
