Scarce: The atlas volume only of the French edition…of Beschouwing van het verschil der bekkens in onderscheidene Volkstammen, both published in 1826 by the renowned Dutch physiologist, anatomist, anthropologist and botanist Gerardus Vrolik (1775-1859). In 'Considérations sur la diversité des bassins de différentes races humaines' 'he observed an animal form in the pelvis of the lower races of mankind, and regarded the structure of this part to present race-modifications, but drew scarcely any positive deductions from his limited researches; (The Anthropological review, 1865, p. 206). With his son Willem (1801-1863) Vrolik established a private anatomical museum, now part of the Amsterdam Medical Centre of the University of Amsterdam, the collections of which formed the basis of a number of comparative studies by the two men, probably most notably Willem's teratological work of 1849, 'Tabulae ad illustrandam embryogensin hominis', though the museum was also famed for its craniological collection. The present copy appears to have belonged to the early nineteenth century Edinburgh surgeon, Professor John Thompson.

Kupferstichtafel, kartonierter Band der Zeit. Seltener Sonderdruck! Gerardus Vrolik (1775-1859 ) was een hoogleraar in de anatomie en botanie aan het Athenae…um Illustre te Amsterdam. Hij was één van de zes leden van de Hollandse Scheikundigen. Erstdruck! Gerardus Vrolik, "1775 in Leyden, geboren, studirte daselbst unter Paradys, Oosterdyk, Voltelen, Ed.Sandifort und S.J.Brugmans, unter dessen Präsidium er schon als Student eine "Diss. acad. de homine ad statum gressumque erectum per coporis fabricam disposito" vertheidigte, während er 1796 mit einer "Diss. med.-bot. sistens observationes de defoliatione vegetabilium et de viribus plantarum" zum Dr. med. promovirt wurde. Schon vor seiner Promotion als Professor der Botanik nach Amsterdam (Athenaeum Illustre) berufen, trat er 1797 dieses Amt an mit einer Rede: "De eo quod Amstelodamenses ad rem botanicam exornandum contulerunt". Als im folgenden Jahre Professor Bonn auf seine Bitte von den Vorlesungen über Anatomie und Physiologie enthoben war, wurden nicht allein diese beiden, sondern auch der Unterricht in der Geburtshilfe an Vrolik übertragen, bei welcher Gelegenheit er eine Rede hielt: "De viribus vitalibus in omni corpore organico observandis iisque constantibus". Bis 1820 hatte er diese vier Wissenschaften docirt, als der Unterricht in der Anatomie und Physiologie dem Professor Bosscha übertragen wurde, während er 1834 die Vorlesungen über Botanik an De Vriese abgab, nachdem schon 1828 die praktische Geburtshilfe von C.B.Tilanus übernommen worden war. Vrolik, der 1859 starb, hat sich auch um die vergleichende Anatomie durch einige kleinere Entdeckungen verdient gemacht, z.B. im Zusammenhang zwischen den Barthaaren der Thiere und dem 5.Nervenpaare und vorzüglich durch die Einrichtung eines privaten anatomischen Museums, das von seinem Sohne Willem Vrolik vielseitig vermehrt, als "Museum Vrolik" sehr bekannt, eine Zierde der Amsterdamer akademischen Sammlung ist. Vrolik hat eine grossse Menge kleinere Beiträge über botanisch, anatomische, physiologische und chirurgische Gegenstände veröffentlicht" die von J. van der Hoeven im "Jahrboek der kon. akadmie van wetenschappen", 1859 veröffentlichten "Levensbericht von Geradus Vrolik" aufgezählt sind."
