Offering this unique association copy of "Homeward: Songs by the Way," by George William Russell (writing under the pseudonym "A.E."). Portland: Thomas B. Mosher, 1904, second American edition, limited to 450 copies. Features original hand-inked Art Nouveau endpaper art in red and black and a dated ex-libris inscription by the noted American printmaker Charles B. Keeler, Jr., executed during his time as a student at Harvard (per the date, see picture); he also hand-numbered it "517" on the pastedown, and added a tiny clover drawing. Small quarto, bound in original gray boards with a paper label to the spine, original dust jacket, an attached ribbon marker, rough cut edges, decorative design illustrations, printed on Van Gelder handmade paper. This collection of poetry originally established Russell as a major voice of the Irish Literary Revival alongside contemporaries like W.B. Yeats. Overall condition is Very Good. Spine label remains bright and legible. The jacket is tanned, has small closed tear at bottom front, and a tiny abrasion at bottom of spine from a small round sticker removal. Mild age toning to the pages, mostly to edges, and heavier tanning in the gutter area where the attached ribbon marker is (pp. 28-29). Else pages are clean, bright and unmarked. A nice copy with the rare, artistic provenance! [CS]. Charles B. Keeler, Jr. (illustrator). …

In den WarenkorbHardcover. Zustand: Very Good. No Jacket. First Edition. First impression of the true first edition, published by Macmillan in the UK in 1933. ***Very good in dark blue cloth-covered boards with gilt titles to spine and front board. Boards slightly rubbed, marked and discoloured. The cloth at the head of the spine is frayed. Fore-edge of text-block lightly foxed. Internally also very good with no inscriptions. No creases or tears. A very few unobtrusive light fox-marks to pages; most pages clean. Printed on nice quality laid paper. No splitting to the binding. Spine tight. No dustwrapper. ***188 pages plus a list of books by the same author at the back of the book. 193mm x 130mm. ***'George William Russell (10 April 1867 - 17 July 1935), who wrote with the pseudonym Æ (often written AE or A.E. - derived from an earlier Æon signifying the lifelong quest of man, subsequently abbreviated), was an Irish writer, editor, critic, poet, painter and Irish nationalist. He was also a writer on mysticism, and a central figure in the group of devotees of theosophy which met in Dublin for many years. His first book of poems, "Homeward: Songs by the Way" (1894), established him in what was known as the Irish Literary Revival, where Æ met the young James Joyce in 1902 and introduced him to other Irish literary figures, including William Butler Yeats. He appears as a character in the "Scylla and Charybdis" episode of Joyce's Ulysses, where he dismisses Stephen's theories on Shakespeare. Dedalus borrows money from him and then remarks: "A.E.I.O.U." His collected poems were published in 1913, with a second edition in 1926. He designed the famous Starry Plough flag for the Irish Citizen Army which was unveiled on 5 April 1914 and flown during the Easter Rising. His house at 17 Rathgar Avenue in Dublin became a meeting-place at the time for everyone interested in the economic and artistic future of Ireland: his Sunday evenings "at home" were a notable feature of Dublin literary life. Michael Collins, the effective leader of the new Government, became acquainted with Russell in the last months of his life.' [Wiki] ***First impression of the true first edition published in 1933.
