It has occupied the attention of sundry scholars for over a century and yet there are enormous gaps in our knowledge of how the Company operated in the many of its comptoirs. There is still enough to occupy the energies of prospective researchers, still more corners of darkness in our knowledge. Only when these are lit up can we claim to move towards a total understanding of the Company as a European and an Asian enterprise.
