No Binding. Zustand: Fine. 1st Edition. 38x32cm (mount size), five mounted wood engravings printed from the blocks. Copy 210 of 250, each print thus numbered, titled and signed in pencil by the artists, with accompanying large sheet of explanatory text folded to 4pp also bearing the copy number in pencil, all in a blue cloth-covered solander box lined with patterned paper printed letterpress from line blocks to a design by Simon Brett, paper title-labels to the front and spine. Perhaps the greatest of all the editioned sets of prints done by Simon Lawrence, and a legendary Fleece Press scarcity. The only one of the 107 bibliographic entries in All Around the Block that was altogether absent from the list of out-of-print titles offered by him on the occasion of the Press's closure in 2024. Magnificent wood engravings - of the large woodland scene 'Beeches' by Peter Reddick, Simon says '[it] was his largest engraving, and as good as anything he ever did'. But perhaps the greatest prize in the set is the Monica Poole engraving, her work now being sought-after and valued by the market to an extent far beyond her contemporary artists in the medium. Here titled 'Spring 1988', this block was also printed in a separate edition of 100 entitled 'Spring after The Hurricane', and like much of her work is now achieving four-figure market prices. This Folio Society Set of the Bronte Sisters Novels should be a seven volume set, but has one book missing which is Jane Eyre. The other volumes, " Villette, Wuthering Heights, The Tenant of Wildfell Hall, Agnes Grey, Shirley, The Professor." each volume are bound in moire' silk, the spine of each book is lightly faded but the gilt lettering is still clear. these six volumes appear to be in an unread condition, th slipcase is also covered in moire' silk and has light wear to its edges, and is intact. Copy 171 of 188 (200) bound in quarter-green leather over green paste paper-covered boards, gilt title to backstrip, in a solander box of green cloth over boards, grey paper title-label to the spine. An early Fleece Press book, and the second (after that on Margaret Wells) dedicated to a particular 20th century wood engravers. Immaculate printing as always, although in 'All Around the Block' Simon Lawrence recalls 'printing misery' as some of the sheets of Barcham Green paper - an atypical choice for the Press - 'had embedded hairs from the pressing felts which either came off onto the inking roller or simply printed as white lines at random'. Number '147' of two hundred numbered copies printed on hand-made Barcham Green Sandwich paper on an 1853 Albion Press. Of the 200 copies, 188 were bound by Smith Settle in quarter green leather and paste paper created by Sage Reynolds in New York; 12 copies were bound by James Brockman, Fellow of Designer Bookbinders, to his own design in full leather. Gilt lettering to the spine, uncut page block, sage green endpapers. Book housed in an original blue cloth-covered clamshell box.
