Handsomely rebound in half dark blue Morocco leather over dark blue cloth boards with 5 raised bands and gilt titles to spine . Binding in excellent in near fine condition. Inside all pages of text in excellent clean bright condition with a touch of toning. The hand coloured plates are in lovely condition with a few minor marks and marginal tide-marks. The book contains the ornithological papers and descriptions of new species collected during the Marquis's expeditions, particularly in Southeast Asia. It is considered a major work by a leading ornithologist and is still a valuable resource for working naturalists. Presentation copy, inscribed 'Lady Ely, with Julia Tweeddales love, August 16, 1881' on the half-title. The recipient was Jane Loftus, Marchioness of Ely (1821-1890), lady of the bedchamber to Queen Victoria. An excellent copy with a fascinating provenance. J. Smit (illustrator).
