In den WarenkorbA Rare Record of Civil War Scandal and Political Warfare [Trial]. Opdyke, George [1805-1880], Defendant. The Great Libel Case. Geo. Opdyke Agt. Thurlow Weed. A Full Report of the Speeches of Counsel, Testimony, Etc., Etc. New York: The American News Company, No. 121 Nassau Street, 1865. 156 pp. Octavo (5-3/4" x 9-1/4"). Stab-stitched pamphlet in printed wrappers, lower section of spine reinforced with cellotape. Light soiling, spine abraded, wrappers, which are partially detached but secure, creased and edgeworn. Moderate toning to interior, corner folds to margins of title page and following few leaves. A good copy. $150. * Only edition of the comprehensive trial report documenting the explosive legal battle between New York City Mayor George Opdyke and Thurlow Weed, the powerful editor of the Albany Evening Journal. At the height of the Civil War, Weed accused Opdyke of using his office to reap illicit profits from government military contracts-essentially charging the Mayor with war profiteering. The trial, which lasted several weeks and featured a "who's who" of New York political and legal elite, ultimately ended in a hung jury, leaving both reputations permanently scarred. Beyond the legal arguments, the testimony offers a raw look at the intersection of private industry and military supply during the Union's most desperate hours. In den WarenkorbFirst edition of this attempt to make a distinctly American system of economic theory, arguing for paper money, free trade, and the end of slavery. George Opdyke (1805-1880) was the son of a farmer and had only a rudimentary education. He became a clothing manufacturer, textile importer, and leading figure in the Chamber of Commerce. By 1853 he was a millionaire. He closely studied the works of Jefferson, Bentham, Comte, and John Stuart Mill. The latter's 1848 Principles of Political Economy, setting forth the economic principles of the classic period in England, especially enthused him, but Opdyke deemed the principles inapplicable to the American experience. "Mill's book, he said, like other scientific works on economics, is the product of a mind reared and educated under political institutions different from those of America. Opdyke aimed to supply a work suitable for America's republican institutions" (Dorfman, p. 755). His financial proposals were remarkably novel. "Commercial crises, he held, would be avoided if the bank notes were suppressed and government instead issued an inconvertible non-interest-bearing currency amounting at all times to ten times the population. Taxes would be less, but the primary objective was stability of price" (ibid., p. 757). Joseph Dorfman, The Economic Mind in American Civilization, vol. II, 1946. Octavo. Original brown cloth, spine lettered in gilt, publisher's device in blind to covers. Contemporary ownership signature to front free endpaper. Spine ends, corners, and outer and inner joints neatly restored, spine and head of front cover a little sunned, slightly rubbed, sporadic light foxing. A very good copy.…
