Hardcover. Zustand: Very Good. 1st Edition. THE REESE COPY -- EXTRA ILLUSTRATED -- WITH A PROOF PLATE. New York: G.M. Bourne, 1831. First edition. 48 plates (with 18 of the original 20 engraved plates in the Bourne issue, plus 30 additional plates in various states and duplicates), bound in a loose-leaf binder. Presented in a quarter green morocco slipcase with chemise. Author, title and publication gilt to the the spine of box. Some sunning to the binder. Scattered foxing and tears at the margins. Each sheet of the Bourne issue has two views of New York, except plate 16 which is the larger "New York from Weehawk" after the painting of William G. Wall and is present in two Bourne issues. The set lacks the frontispiece and pl. 19, with a duplicate of pl. 16. A proof plate of "Broadway, near Franklin Street" is mounted and laid in, without Bourne's imprint (indicating a later, Disturnell, printing) and labeled "PROOF" in pencil. The engravings are printed on india paper and mounted later in the 19th century. Foxing, spotting and some tears to the margins. These views depict New York City in the 1820s and 30's, offering an extensive view of urban life. George Melksham Bourne (1806-1887) issued these beautiful city views from his shop on Broadway near Franklin Street in 1831. Later, John Disturnell took up the plates and published them under his own name. From the collection of Noel Bleeker Fox (1878-1972) with bibliographic notes and correspondence with Robert Fridenburg tucked into binder. From the collection of William S. Reese (1955-2018), who was one of the great Americana booksellers. His firm continues to trade in New Haven. After his death, Christie's New York sold his private collection (24-25 May 2022; the present item was lot 156).…
