Hardcover. Dust Jacket Included. 4to., (10 2/8 x 6 6/8 inches). Frontispiece portrait, folding facsimile map, and plates reproducing other contemporary documents. Original brown cloth, dust jacket (browned). Provenance: with the bookplate of James S. Copley on the front paste-down, his sale, Sotheby's New York "Magnificent American, Historical Documents", 20th May 2011, lot 1059. First edition, one of 325 copies, of which only 175 were offered for sale (4-page prospectus loosely inserted). The "history of the man who introduced the art of printing into the territory within the boundaries of the modern American State of California. Zamorano was a Mexican army officer who served in California during the period that territory was a part of the Republic of Mexico. in addition, he was, for six years, commandant of the most important military post within the Territory, the 'presidio' at Monteray. As an incidental private act, possibly solely for his personal satisfaction, Zamorano imported the first printing press to be set up west of the Rocky Mountains and on it cause to be printed the series of small books and official proclamations that are today the rarest of California imprints. For this he has been remembered" (page vii). From the distinguished library of James S. Copley: "While institutional in scope and significance, the manuscripts and books in the Library clearly reflect the discernment of a passionate collector and equally passionate patriot. The birth, survival, and expansion of the United States is brilliantly documented in the writings of the men and women who founded and protected our nation. It would be wrong to think of the Copley Library as exclusively American, however. As a reader and a newspaperman, Mr. Copley had wide and eclectic interests, which also provided themes for the collection. Letters and manuscripts from authors, scientists, and musicians as diverse as Charlotte Brontë, Albert Einstein, and Tchaikovsky also found a place in the Library" (David Redden, Sotheby's). …
