The authors have presupposed no knowledge on the part of the reader; but at the same time have carried facts forward to a point of technical accuracy. Hardcover. xvi, 484 p.; 23 cm. Letters written mainly to Mrs. C. L. Currie and edited by her. Very full analytical contents `A clever, nice Hindoo teaches me for half an hour every day except Sunday. He comes every day with his two strokes of red paint on his forehead; by these he declares himself a worshipper of some special deity. I have not yet learnt the mysteries of all these signs which the Hindoos carry on their foreheads; some day I hope to be initiated. A word now about the Hindoo religion. The Brahmins count in their number some really learned men, learned in their philosophy, and in their literature. They keep their followers completely in the dark, or mystify those who have come in contact with Western life by denying that they are idolaters, and giving a symbolical meaning to their idols and worship. The fact is, Hindooism consists in gross idolatry, carried on with endless lights, tom-toming, i.e. drumming, and unmeaning cries. It is a most impure religion, and much obscenity and indecency is mixed up with their festivals. Some of their worship has come to light in the courts. The very temples and idols scarcely attempt to veil the wickedness. One sees the depth to which the devil has degraded his victims.' (1887, p. 269) -- `I have been reading some of Pusey and Meyrick on our Lady. Dreadfully unpleasant reading; showing a state of mind quite phenomenal and to be feared.' (1886, p. 177) -- `Is it true that Canon Liddon's health has broken down? For many reasons I should regret it, but especially for the unfinished Life of Dr. Pusey. We want to know more of the interior life of this man, if he had one.' (1889, p. 475) VG lightly edgeworn orig. maroon cloth.…

Soft cover. Zustand: Very Good. 1st Edition. The sole UK printing published by The Scolar Press for The Ilkley Literature Festival, Ilkley in April 1973. A collection of poems commissioned for the inaugural 'Ilkley Literature Festival' which had been opened by W.H. Auden during the last year of his life. The publication comprises a green card printed folder with some mild creasing and edge-west to the edges, a 24 page pamphlet giving the text of the poems (in fine condition) and 25 loose leaves of facsimile manuscript of the commissioned poems, including two leaves of Auden's 'Lullaby'. The Scolar Press printed facsimiles of these contributions on white laid paper. The paper is watermarked 'L'Amatruda' and originates from a paper mill in Amalfi, Salerno (Italy). These facsimile manuscripts are loosely contained within a pocket at the rear inside cover of the card folder and are all in Fine condition. The 10 contributing fellow-poets were commissioned 'to take a title or epigraph from one of Auden's published works as a starting point for an original composition'. Each of the 10 facsimile poems has been hand signed a second time by the poets themselves in addition to the facsimile signature already present in the production. It is highly likely that very few sets were signed by all contributors. Collectible. More images available on request. Ashton Rare Books welcomes direct contact. Signed by Author(s).…
