Die Bewegung entglitt jedoch Lord Gordon. Es kam zu Exzessen gegen die Katholiken. Eindrucksvoll schildert Dickens, wie sich die blinde Wut der Aufrührer in Plünderung, Brandstiftung und sinnloser Zerstörung austobt. Die Urheber und Drahtzieher, die im Hintergrund bleiben und straffrei ausgehen, sind 'ehrenwerte' Gentleman . "Barnaby Rudge" ist der zweiteselbstständige Roman, den Dickens unter dem Obertitel "Meister Humphreys Wanduhr" veröffentlichte.
