Disbound. Zustand: Good, removed pamphlet. 11 p.; 20.5 cm. Two copies are available. [title continues] held in the Town Hall, Oxford, the twelfth of November, 1819, to consider the propriety of voting an address to his Royal Highness the Prince Regent, to declare their loyalty and attachment to the Constitution. -- Notice, p. [2]: `The following was taken down from memory, after the Meeting, and was not intended for publication; but several Friends having communicated to me their wishes that I would publish it, I have thought it right to comply with their request.' -- Text begins: `The Rev. Vaughan Thomas [Anglican Vicar of Yarnton, 1775-1858] having proposed that a Declaration should be adopted by the meeting, expressive of its loyalty and abhorrence of the principles and actions of the Radical Reformers, and that it should be signed by all the Freeholders of the County who might approve its sentiments; Mr. Stratton rose and spoke nearly as follows' -- `Sir,it is not a question whether this or that minister shall be supported, whether this or that act of government is to be opposed--but, whether we are to have any government at all?--It is not a question whether Catholic emancipation is to be conceded or refused, whether toleration is to be granted to this or that sect of Christians, but, whether we are to have any Christianity at all? And this will appear more strongly, when we consider the illegal preparations for the public meetings.' (p. 5) -- Not in Cordeaux, Bibliography of printed works relating to Oxfordshire (see no. 2703, An act for discharging the estate of George Frederick Stratton - the speaker's father? - in 1810) -- Not in Copac or WorldCat.
