The Second edition, extensively revised and enlarged by Dinsmore, is a publication of the Faculty of Arts and Sciences of the American University of Beirut (Natural Science Series Number 1). The first edition written by Dr. Post was published in 1896. This edition is in two volumes: Volume I, dated 1932, text figures numbered 1 - 406 as b. w. line drawings throughout, pp. xxxxiii, 658, orig. paper cover bound in at rear. Volume II, dated 1933, text figures continue from numbers 407 - 774, pp.928, 5 maps of the Syrian Desert followed by the original paper wrapper bound at rear, includes index first in Arabic followed by Hebrew then a comprehensive General Index. Both volumes identically bound in full green morocco with raised bands and git title to spine. In very good condition, other than small loss to margins of front 3 pages in vol II from worm damage, and some water marks affecting lower edge of first 20 pages also in volume II. A very smart set. Size: large 8vo.

Blue cloth with Oxford University Press imprint at the base of the spine, the pages of two gatherings have toned in comparison to the rest of the contents light wear to the cloth but still a very good set of this important work. First published and written by Post alone in 1896 this edition is a substantial revision of the earlier work.

Still the only recent comprehensive treatment of the flora of Lebanon and Syria, the coverage extending to Palestine, Israel and possibly parts of Jordan. Post, formerly professor natural science at the American University of Beirut, whose herbarium miraculously survived the Lebanese civil war, prepared the first edition, now extremely scarce; this second edition was revised by Jerusalem-based Dinsmore. Although Mouterde's Flore du Liban and la Syrie is more modern it is less comprehensive. Text in English. In good condition, lightly aged, with slight damage to one corner of first leaf, and thin strip of paper from mount adhering to reverse of second leaf, which is franked 'Kent & Strathearn', with postmark, and addressed to 'Francis Freeling Esquire | &c &c &c | Genl. Post Office | Lombard Street | London'. Folded four times. The letter begins: 'Dear Sir | It being of some consequence that the enclosed should reach Germany in safety, as it contains the notification of a young M an's appointment to a Commission in the British Service, whose unfortunate parents are very little able to maintain him, I shall esteem it a very particular favor if through your good offices, and the medium of our Agent at Toninghen this can be accomplished'. He knows Freeling will do his 'best endeavours to effect the thing if it is possible', and adds, 'that the letter is written as ever if opened not to be of any consequence, and therefore if sent by a private hand not liable to expose the Bearer to anything unpleasant in consequence'. From the distinguished autograph collection of the psychiatrist Richard Alfred Hunter (1923-1981), whose collection of 7000 works relating to psychiatry is now in Cambridge University Library. Hunter and his mother Ida Macalpine had a particular interest in the illness of King George III, and their book 'George III and the Mad Business' (1969) suggested the diagnosis of porphyria popularised by Alan Bennett in his play 'The Madness of George III'.
