Let the matter be looked at entirely from the point of view of the architect. For a period of a dozen years, every possible method of collecting, sorting, classifying, filing and indexing all the catalogues and circulars of building materials was conscientiously given a fair trial, and after a thorough test, every method was just as conscientiously abandoned. They were abandoned because they did not work well in the specification room. They were not practicable. Everything was tried, arrangements of shelves, bookcases, pasteboard boxes, filing cases, patent binders, filing cabinets, cases of drawers, indexing schemes and " index- rerums. " At first, all the big books were put together in one place and all the little books in another place; and then all the big and little books were mixed up together, and indexed according to subject. Some had four pages, and some had four hundred pages. Barely two were of the same shape or superficies. The little ones would not stand up, and could not be gotten at when laid flat. Another elaborate system was introduced, and a voluminous cross-index started, but the big books contained too much useless matter, and the little books got lost or mislaid or could not be found just when wanted. Then the writer decided, after much time and expense, that the present system of publishing and distributing catalogues, as far as the architect is concerned, might be rightly termed " The Catalogue Delusion, " and that the only solution of the problem must lie in a scientific standard catalogue and index of building materials and construction, gradually developed toward an ideal result by the co-operation of manufacturer and architect. Briefly, then, what is Sweet's Indexed Catalogue of Building Construction? It is a scientific catalogue book system ( a volume or series of volumes) , as easy to refer to as a dictionary, consisting of groups of catalogues from which as much unnecessary matter as possible has been eliminated, carefully indexed and cross- indexed, and sent out gratuitously by the publishers to every architect of good standing. Each catalogue in the work is organically arranged in its parts. It proceeds in a regular order from fact " A " to fact " Z " . Illustrations of a certain class are all grouped and arranged according to some obvious plan. Volumes 1, 2, and index have the heaviest rubbing with chipping and tears. Volume 2 has clear tape to the spine. Spines are sun bleached. Gutter is broken between pages 74 and 75 in volume 2 exposing binding with some gutters taped with clear tape. First 46 pages of volume 1 are loose from the binding bust still included. Some covers and pages have soiling. 5 books have scribbling on the textblock. Pages have underlining and notations. Box has heavy wear with chipping, tears and scratches. The spine back is chipped and lacks about an inch from the foot and a quarter inch from the crown, some wear at the corners and edges, else very good. A scarce first edition containing manuscript poems by George H. Kimball and Fred E. Sturgess written in 1866, when both were students at the Bangor Theological Seminary in Maine: tipped-in on the front free endpaper is a manuscript poem by Kimball addressed to Sturgess (January 1st, 1866). Laid-in is another manuscript poem by Kimball: "Sacred to the memory of Miss Minnie Boyden" (February 5th, 1866); and three manuscript poems: "An Acrostic" (two versions), and "To my son F.G. Sturgess" (which makes frequent reference to Santa Claus). The poems are accomplished, and appear not to have been published. A nice association.…

Unbound. Zustand: Near Fine. A collection of 15 broadsides of poetry published by the Doctor Generosity Press, run out of a tavern in New York City at 73rd and 2nd on the East Side. The endeavor was headed by waiter Ray Freed, who edited a number of books and broadsides published by the press from 1969 through 1972. Folio sheets of one to four pages, printed versos only. Overall very good or better with light edge wear, staple holes and horizontal creases to all, likely as issued; one broadside is trimmed at the bottom affecting the poem. Each broadside was limited to 500 unnumbered copies "distributed for free on the streets of New York." Contributors include Paul Blackburn, A.E. Wyatt, George Ayla, Dunbar Grady, Peter Hammer, George Kimball, Robert Kinzie, Dan Maurice, James McMann, S.
