This precis, with photographs of original weapons of the period, was published in observance of the then forthcoming bicentennial of the War of Independence. From an obituary of the author posted on-line: "George C. Neumann was born on March 29, 1926 in New Britain, Connecticut. He attended Wesleyan University, Princeton University and Harvard Business School. He was a noted expert on the subjects of antiques and colonial military accoutrements and authored several books and periodicals on those topics. In 1979, George sold his extensive private collection of Revolutionary War weapons and artifacts to the National Park Service. Portions of The George C. Neumann Collection are on display at Valley Forge National Historical Park in Valley Forge, Pennsylvania, while much of it is preserved in museum vaults. George was a founding member of the Brigade of the American Revolution and Third New Jersey Regiment historical reenacting organizations. He served honorably in the United States Navy during World War II. He was committed to the preservation of the history of America with a focused interest on the ideals of the Founding Fathers." Valley Forge National Historical Park takes care of and manages diverse collections of artifacts and documents related to the 1777-1778 encampment at Valley Forge and the soldiers and officers who fought for the independence of the United States. The George C. Neumann Collection is comprised of approximately 1600 historic items. The Neumann collection consists of four separate, yet related, parts: firearms, edged weapons, pole arms, and accouterments. It is through the study of these weapons and their use that we gain an understanding of how the common soldier achieved victory. This collections features Revolutionary War firearms that includes weapons from both sides of the conflict. The guns were were made by various manufacturers in different countries, including England, Germany, Spain, France, and America. Several different types are represented in the collection: flintlock muskets, fowlers, carbines, and rifles. In the area of Swords and Other Weapons from Valley Forge, the collection includes various swords and other bladed weapons. It contains military swords, hunting swords, halberds, a spontoon, and a pike. The hunting swords were civilian weapons that were used as symbols of rank by American officers who could not afford heavier military swords. The halberds in this collection are also distinctive.
