He then worked in Niger ia for several years as a tobacco leaf buyer for the British-American Tobacco Company, while studying the plants of Nigeria. After returning to England and settling in Chichester in Sussex, he opened a nursery and garden center with a comprehensive range of plants, including many that are rare or unusual.
