hardcover. Zustand: Very good. Catlin, George (illustrator). third edition. Two volumes large octavos, blind-stamped brown cloth. Wear at cover edges, near Very Good. {Howes C-241; Wagner-Camp 84.5; Sabin 11536} "Catlin illustrated his book with line-cut reductions of his original paintings, and in the text described his adventurous years among the Indians. He recorded his observations of ceremonies, dances, hunting methods, forms of warfare, and the ways of daily living among the major tribes of the high plains and the Rocky Mountains" -- Wagner / Camp / Becker, 84. William Clark -- he of Lewis & Clark fame--testified that "I have seen Mr. Catlin's Collection of Portraits of Indians, east of the Rocky Mountains, many of which were familiar to me, and painted in my presence: as far as they have included Indians of my acquaintance, the likenesses are easily recognized, bearing the most striking resemblance to the originals, as well as faithful representations of their costumes." Among the many images are three maps, one folding. 052507A Americana, Native Americans.

A couple of spots in the text, a very nice clean copy in a binder's dark blue buckram with black leather labels lettered in gilt. George Catlin (1796-1872) an American painter and chronicler of the indigenous Americans, started his professional life as a lawyer but in 1821 abandoned his legal practice and moved to Philadelphia to pursue a career as an artist. He was elected a member of the Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Arts in 1824. In 1830, after President Andrew Jackson signed the Indian Removal Act forcibly expelling all indigenous inhabitants to the east of the Mississippi, Catlin began painting in the western United States to try to record every indigenous tribe before "their passing from the face of the Earth". He made five trips between 1830 and 1836, eventually visiting fifty tribes. When Catlin returned east in 1838, he assembled the paintings and numerous artifacts into his Indian Gallery which exhibited in major cities such as Pittsburgh, Cincinnati, and New York. Initially sucessful in this enterprise he attempted to sell his collection to the U.S. government; however the United States Congress rejected his petition to purchase the works. In 1839 Catlin took his collection across the Atlantic for a tour of European capitals. While in London he published 'Letters and Notes on the Manners, Customs, and Condition of the North American Indians' in 1841 of which this third edition was published the following year. Second Edition. A major anthropological study by "one of the most admirable observers of manners who ever lived among the aborigines of America." (Alexander von Humboldt) The American artist visited a total of forty-eight native tribes on his extensive tour of the great American west, and executed some six hundred paintings, including portraits of Indians in full native dress, views of their villages and wigwams, and portrayals of their games, dances, religious ceremonies, buffalo hunting and other amusements. The present narrative vividly relates his adventures, and faithfully records the manners and customs of the Blackfoot, Cree, Ojibway, Sioux, Pawnee, Osage, Chinook, Cherokee, and other tribes; of special interest is the section on the Mandans of the Upper Missouri, who were annihilated by smallpox in 1837. The numerous illustrations were copied and reduced for the engraver by Catlin himself, from his original paintings. McCracken 8G. Howes C-241.
