About the Book: - The author has described the cultural heritage of India, especially in the three Presidencies of Bengal, Madras and Bombay at the time of British rule during a journey in the East, where he is supposed to get a warm welcome most assuredly. He may dissipate at once and for ever some of those fallacious opinions and crude notions that he persists in entertaining regarding that land called 'India'. That he may experience a pleasant time of it during his visit at 'Our Station'. He indulges a hope, and if in the Plates of 'Curry and Rice', now set before him, the flavor is found to be a little too spicy and a little too pungent, and, to many perhaps, a thought too hot, remember that it is the nature of Curry to be so. Trusting, however, that it will prove to be a dish to his liking, and leaving him alone to partake of it, and he hopes enjoy it. Through the numerous illustrations, the author explores the condition of the inhabitants in view of giving the book a uniform and beautiful touch. In that context, the book is good for all. About the Author: - George Francklin Atkinson was a British army officer and artist (18221859). He was captain in Bengal Engineering in 1959. He wrote and illustrated numerous occasional papers in the periodicals of the sixties, especially The Leisure Hour, familiarizing English readers with the civil and military life of Europeans in India ; he published Pictures from the North, in pen and pencil, sketched during a summer ramble, 1848 ; The Campaign in India, 18578, from drawings made during the eventful period of the Great Mutiny ; dedicated to H.M. Native Indians were seen as treacherous and unchangeable following the rebellion. British colonialists distanced themselves from their subjects in an effort to preserve their 'Britishness' within the foreign space of India. Atkinson was a keen artist and drew all of the 40 plates in the book. Each plate is accompanied by a brief description. The work enjoyed a long period of popularity among the British following Atkinson's early death, in part because of the satirical nature of the work, but also because it presented a discerning view of colonial life in India. . . . .
