[ 1902 ], IV-308 pp. avec une carte dépliante En juillet 1895, l'officier et explorateur Emile Gentil (1866-1914) remonte le fleuve Congoà bord du vapeur "Léon Blot", afin de trouver la voie la plus aisée entre le Gabon et le Tchad. Il signe en octobre, avec le sultan Gaourang, un traité confiant à la France le protectorat sur le Baghirmi et la lutte contre le seigneur soudanais Rabah (Rabih Zuhair). Rabah sera tué en 1900 à la bataille de Kousséri (le commandant Lamy sera également tué durant l'assaut). L'auteur (qui donnera son nom à "Port-Gentil" et dont les violences seront reprochées) dénonce ici les violences et l'esclavagisme de Rabah, mais reconnait sa bravoure et ses talents d'organisateur du territoire tchadien. Émile Gentil est la figure centrale de la pénétration française vers le lac Tchad par le Congo et le Chari. Ce livre constitue son rapport officiel et littéraire sur la descente du Chari à bord du vapeur Lamy, l'établissement du protectorat sur le Baguirmi et la campagne contre l'armée de Rabah, le « Samory de l'Afrique centrale ». L'ouvrage offre une chronique détaillée des missions françaises (Gentil depuis le Sud, Lamy depuis le Sahara) et de la fameuse bataille de Kousséri (22 avril 1900) où périrent à la fois le commandant Lamy et Rabah. The report is devoted to Malta, Syria and Lebanon in the first part, and to Jerusalem and Egypt in the second part. The book deals with the customs and legends of the visited places, with a special emphasis on the sanctuaries of Jerusalem. During the journey, one of the companions of Gentil died, and about this event, Gentil has written a separate book in 1854. The first issue was published by Jules Verronnais in Metz & J. Lecoffre in Paris. A piece of paper with the names of the new publishers is pasted over the original impressum with the date 1855.The spine and the boards are very slightly rubbed, very slight foxing/spotting to the first and last few leaves. Two parts in one volume, title page, 580 pages, 24 x 15.5 cm, numerous full-page and text illustrations after drawings by Gentil, three floor-plans bound in at the end: one double-page, one folding; contemporary quarter calf over marbled boards, foot of the spine rubbed with small loss, boards a little scuffed, occasional text spotting, a few leaves stained, but in very good sound condition. Published at the height of great interest in the Middle East and the Holy Land with fine illustrations after original drawings by Gentil including a series on the Way of the Cross and floorplans of three sites sacred for Christians (the publisher no doubt with a keen eye for a Catholic audience): the underground church in the valley of Jehoshaphat, containing the tomb of the Virgin; the Church of Bethlehem with its underground chapels; and the Church of the Holy Sepulchre. Gentil a 'Chevalier de Saint-Sepulchre' recounts his pilgrimage in two parts, the first: from Lyon to Jerusalem via Malta, Lebanon and the Syrian coast; the second from Eygpt and subsequent return to France.
