Hardcover. Zustand: Near Fine. 1st Edition. 8°. 3 Volumes (of 15). Vol. 6: 1-160, i-ccviii; 1-10 (Tables). Vol. 9: i-ccclix; 1-10 (Index). Vol 11/2: 1-368; 1-11 (Table). Quarter leather over marbled boards with initials G.W. embossed in gilt on from covers; two morocco backpieces each; edges stained red; engraved ExLibris to inn…er covers. Provenance: Georg Ernst Levin von Wintzigerode's library in Bodenstein. Very nice condition, apart from a small stab into the foredge of Vol. 11 resulting in slight paper damage to the white margin of some gatherings (see image). - A very rare Magazine published in Paris with the help of the French government. It contained news of the American Colonies on their way to independence and of the nascent United States, correspondence from America and other British colonies and from London, and official documents, often published here for the first time. - This set is unfortunately incomplete, but even individual volumes are rarely found in libraries, even rarer on the market. The three volumes present here contain a wealth of material, among it the second, corrected translation of the Declaration of Independence, the Constitutions of Maryland, New York and South Carolina (as far as I see in the first translations), and some texts by Benjamin Franklin, among them the first translation and first appearance in book form of "Intended Vindication and Offer from Congress to Parliament" of 1775 (probably translated here from the Public Advertiser, 18 July 1777) and the "Rules by Which a Great Empire May Be Reduced to a Small One", translated from the Public Advertiser, September 1773). - The former owner, Count Wintzigerode, was an important anti-revolutionary politician from Württemberg. As minister of the exterior, he was in close contact to Napoleon during the wars and was later delegated to represent Württemberg at the Vienna Congress.
