In den WarenkorbPaperback. Zustand: Very Good. A sourcebook of approximately 200 easy-to-follow detailed structural plans of private gardens for gardeners to copy or reinterpret for their own gardens. The main features of all the plans can be easily adapted to different size gardens and climatic regions. Because good design is the key to a successful garden, this book has collected together some of the best of today's structural garden plans, providing practical solutions for sites of varying size and shape in both town and country. After an introduction that explains the basics of garden design, the book features about 200 structural garden plans divided into thematic chapters. The plans include those for problem sites, such as small, narrow, shaded, or sloping gardens, as well as key garden features such as steps, decking, boundaries, water features, lighting, and ornaments, and key planting. The book also includes a glossary of terms and techniques, as well as a directory of the designers' contact details. The book has been read, but is in excellent condition. Pages are intact and not marred by notes or highlighting. The spine remains undamaged.

Endpapers of book by Daniel Buren. "Since public museums came into being in the late 18th century, artists have looked upon them with a mixture of reverence, complicity, suspicion, and disdain. In The Museum as Muse, artists of many persuasions speak their minds about museums, their functions and spaces, their practices and politics, and their relationship to the art they contain. More than 60 artists are represented by a wide range of works: photographs of museum patrons by Henri Cartier-Bresson and Elliot Erwitt; 'personal museums' and 'cabinets of curiosities' by Charles Wilson Peale, Marcel Duchamp, and Claes Oldenburg; fantasies of the destruction or transformation of museums by Hubert Robert, Ed Ruscha, and Christo and more, including works created especially for this project by contemporary artists, and an anthology of statements and writings by artists about museums. This volume was published to accompany an exhibition at The Museum of Modern Art, New York." -- publisher's statement. Very Good. Light wear to dust-jacket including a 6 mm. tear to spine edge and bumping of upper edge of recto. Light yellowing of page edges. Contents otherwise clean and unmarked.

In den WarenkorbHardcover. Zustand: Near Fine. Zustand des Schutzumschlags: Very Good. First Edition. First impression of the true first edition - the first publication of the Clark Lectures given at Trinity College, Cambridge, 1944. Preface written by C.S. Lewis, Magdalen College, Oxford 7 October 1953. [Part of the Oxford History of English Literature series edited by F. P. Wilson and Bonamy Dobree.] ***Near fine in navy-blue cloth-covered boards with gilt titles to the spine. The gilt is still beautifully bright, having been protected by the dustwrapper. Head and tail of spine just slightly creased. Top corner tip of the front board slightly creased, but no serious bumps and no tears to the cloth. No reading lean to the binding. Spine tight. Page block edges clean - just lightly foxed to the top edge. Internally also near fine, with a contemporaneous owner's name and date: 'Janet Allen, January 1957' in dark blue fountain pen ink to the top corner of the front free endpaper. Very light offsetting to the front and rear free endpapers. Pages clean without any foxing. Nice quality paper stock. No creases or tears. ***In a very good buff-coloured dustwrapper, which has been corner price-clipped, with a new printed price at the top corner, but this has been crossed out in ink. The dustwrapper is complete, with the edges just slightly creased and rubbed, mainly to the head and tail of the spine. No chips, serious creases or tears. Slight browning and fading to the spine. ***vi prelims plus contents page plus 696 pages. 226mm x 154 mm. Contents: Introduction: New Learning and New Ignorance; Book I. Late Medieval: I. The Close of the Middle Ages in Scotland; II. The Close of the Middle Ages in England. ***Book II. 'Drab': I. Religious Controversy and Translation; II. Drab Age Verse; III. Drab and Transitional Prose; Book III. 'Golden': I. Sidney and Spenser; II. Prose in the 'Golden' Period; III. Verse in the 'Golden' Period; Epilogue; Chronological Table; Bibliography; Index. ***'The exclusion of drama (reserved for treatment elsewhere) enables the author of this volume to present a fuller picture of literary development in the Sixteenth Century than would otherwise have been possible. Pains have been taken to prevent the concept of "the Renaissance" from imposing a false unity on this complicated period. The great medieval literature of Scotland and the work of Sidney, Spenser, and Hooker naturally provide the high lights, but More and Tyndale are revalued and many inferior but more typical authors are shown to be of importance for the literary historian. The pattern which emerges is, in some ways, unexpected.' (Quote taken from the front flap of the dustwrapper) ***C. S. Lewis includes in his scholarly study authors such as Alexander Barclay, Gavin or Gawin Douglas, Michael Drayton, John Fisher, John Knox, Thomas John Lyly, Thomas Nashe, William Roper, the sonnets of William Shakespeare, Sir Thomas Moore, Alexander Scott; Sir Philip Sydney etc. etc. ***First impression of the true first edition of this important literary work, complete in its original dustwrapper, in very nice collectable condition. A very detailed, scholarly book and a classic title, of interest to scholars of English Literature in the sixteenth century, and collectors of C. S. Lewis first edition titles. Uncommon in the dustwrapper. ***For all our books, postage is charged at cost, allowing for packaging: any shipping rates indicated on ABE are an average only: we will reduce the P & P charge where appropriate - please contact us for postal rates for heavier books and sets etc.
