In den Warenkorb5 broadsheets, the Observer printed both sides, the others rectos only. Running from the 4th to the 12th May 1926, the General Strike was an unsuccessful attempted to force the government to act to prevent wage reductions and worsening conditions for over a million miners. The government enlisted middle class volunteers to maintain essential services. Following a meeting in Hyde Park, the Communist M.P. Shapurji Dorabji Saklatvala was arrested and jailed for two months on a charge of sedition [see Emergency Bulletin]. These four publications are typical of the much reduced news sheets of the period whilst the printers were on strike.
