Complete with over 200 illustrations by Frederic Remington and other "eminent artists" of the time. Frontispiece portrait of General Nelson A. Miles with tissue cover, the first issue with his name below the portrait. (Howes M595) (Graff 2789) A solid example. General Nelson A. Miles (1839-1925) served in the American Civil War, the Indian Wars, and the Spanish-American War. When the United States entered World War I in 1917, the 77-year-old general offered to serve but was turned down by President Woodrow Wilson. He passed away in 1925 and was buried in Arlington National Cemetery.

Special limited edition souvenir of the thirteenth annual Lincoln Dinner of the Republican Club of the city of New-York, 1899. Duodecimo, original half-cloth with gilt titles to the spine, frontispiece of Abraham Lincoln, illustrated. One of 500 numbered copies, this is number 126. Boldly signed on the front free endpaper in pencil by President Theodore Roosevelt, General Nelson A. Miles, and Admiral W. S. Schley, and on the front pastedown by Republican politician Chauncey M. Depew. Theodore Roosevelt was an American statesman, author, explorer, soldier, naturalist, and reformer who served as the 26th President of the United States from 1901 to 1909. As a leader of the Republican Party during this time, he became a driving force for the Progressive Era in the United States in the early 20th century. In very good condition with light soiling. Accompanied by an original program from the dinner, which took place at Delmonico's on February 13, 1899, and featured toasts by Roosevelt, Miles, and Schley, with Depew acting as toastmaster. In near fine condition. Housed in the original cloth slipcase, in very good condition. Rare and desirable, especially signed Abraham Lincoln served as the 16th President of the United States from March 1861 until his assassination in April 1865. He led the United States through its Civil War, and in doing so preserved the Union of the United States of America, abolished slavery, and strengthened the federal government. 'Lincoln and His Cabinet: A Lecture Delivered Before the New Haven Colony Historical Society, Tuesday, March 10, 1896' by journalist and Assistant Secretary of War Charles Anderson Dana offers a reflective analysis of Abraham Lincolnâs leadership through the lens of his interactions with the members of his Cabinet during the Civil War.

Publisher's deluxe first edition of this autobiography of a great military general; from the library of Philemon Tecumseh Sherman. Quarto, bound in full crushed morocco with gilt titles to the front panel, images of a cannon and trumpet stamped in blind, all edges gilt, gilt patterned floral endpapers, tissue-guarded frontispiece portrait of General Nelson A. Miles, copiously illustrated with pictures by Frederic Remington and other eminent artists. P. T. Shermanâs bookplate to the front pastedown. In good condition, loss to the spine, splitting to the hinges, rubbing and loss to the extremities of the front and rear panels. General William Tecumseh Shermanâs son P. T. Sherman was a lawyer in New York, specializing in labor and insurance, and was elected a member of the New York Board of Alderman in the late 1880s. In the early 1900s, he was appointed the New York Commissioner of Labor. He transferred his library to his niece, Eleanor Sherman Fitch, the granddaughter of General Sherman through his eldest daughter, Maria âMinnieâ Ewing Sherman Fitch, before he died. Until now, the book was held at the family estate in Washington County, Pennsylvania. Nelson A. Miles was an American military general who served in the American Civil War, the American Indian Wars, and the Spanishâ"American War. From 1895 to 1903, Miles served as the last Commanding General of the United States Army, before the office was retooled as Chief of Staff of the Army.
