Miles (1839-1925) served in the American Civil War, the Indian Wars, and the Spanish-American War. When the United States entered World War I in 1917, the 77-year-old general offered to serve but was turned down by President Woodrow Wilson. He passed away in 1925 and was buried in Arlington National Cemetery.
