Dr. Berta Geissmar stammte aus einer hoch-musikalischen protestantischen Mannheimer Familie jüdischer Herkunft. Sie lernte den jungen Wilhelm Furtwängler Anfang der zwanziger Jahre in ihrem Elternhaus kennen. Seit der Zeit begleitete sie seine Karriere mit Anteilnahme - viele Jahre, bis kurz vor ihrer erzwungenen Emigration aus Deutsch- land im Jahr 1935, als seine Sekretärin. Danach lebte sie in London, wo sie 1936 von Sir Thomas Beecham engagiert wurde. So erlebte sie den Musikbetrieb der beiden schließ-lich verfeindeten Staaten in den schwierigen Jahren an entscheidender Stelle mit. Berta Geissmar ist die wichtigste Zeugin für Furtwänglers nach dem Zweiten Weltkrieg oft angezweifelte Integrität während der Zeit des Dritten Reiches. Von besonderem doku-mentarischen Interesse sind ihre Berichte vom hoffnungslosen Kampf der künstleri-schen Kreise in Deutschland gegen die Übergriffe einer skrupellosen Politik mit all ihren Begleiterscheinungen. Die deutsche Übersetzung von Berta Geiss-mars Buch erschien bereits 1945 im Atlantis-Verlag, 1951 die leicht gekürzte 3. Auflage davon, die dieser Ausgabe zugrunde liegt. Fred K. Prieberg, der besondere Kenner der Musik im Dritten Reich, hat in einem aus-führlichen Vorwort und mit detaillierten Anmerkungen zu den entsprechenden Buch-stellen diese Neuauflage in den Rahmen unse-rer heutigen Kenntnisse der Tatsachen gestellt, die Berta Geissmar damals nicht wissen konnte oder aus der Zeit heraus und aus Rücksicht auf andere nicht nennen wollte.
