Hardcover. Zustand: Very Good. First and only edition. 1923 Columbia College yearbook. Bookplate, light edgewear on the boards and the front hinge weakened, but a sound, very good copy. Initially, Gehrig could not play baseball for Columbia because he had played baseball for a summer professional league during his freshman year, not knowing that doing so jeopardized his eligibility to play collegiate sports. Gehrig was, however, ruled eligible to play on the Lions' football team and was a standout fullback and tackle. He later gained baseball eligibility and joined the Lions on that squad as well. This yearbook features photographs and accounts of his days on the football team during the 1922 season. Gehrig is pictured at least twice and is lauded for his "consistent line-plunging," although his efforts could not prevent the season from being "an unmitigated failure, with few, if any, redeeming qualities." Other notables pictured include the authors Corey Ford and Henry Morton Robinson, and Walter Koppisch, Gehrig's teammate, who was later elected to the College Football Hall of Fame.

10 x 8 inches (254 x 203 mm). Vintage silver print. Photographer's ink stamp "George Burke" on verso. An appealing portrait, boldly signed and inscribed by Lou Gehrig in the later years of his playing career, taken by the noted baseball photographer George Burke. - The bust length three quarter view shows Gehrig relaxed and smiling in his Yankees cap; the inscription reads "To Nancy - Best Wishes", in ink at lower portion. - George Burke of Chicago shaped the look of Major League player imagery in the 1930s; his studio prints were widely distributed to clubs and the press, and his Yankees portraits are among the most sought after player images of the era. A contemporary Burke studio print, corroborated by the inked studio stamp on verso, preserving the "Iron Horse" at the height of his popularity. - A few scattered creases (not affecting the emulsion). Remnants of old mounting at corners recto and scattered remnants verso.

Rare Reach Official American League Baseball signed by a legendary group of baseball legends and Hall of Famers. Signed by Babe Ruth on the sweetspot, setting the tone for one of the most remarkable gatherings of baseball legends captured on a single ball. Surrounding the "Sultan of Swat" are the signatures of Lou Gehrig, Jimmie Foxx, and Al Simmons â" for a total of four of the five Hall of Famers famously struck out in succession by Carl Hubbell during the 1934 All-Star Game. Additionally signed by Connie Mack, Lefty Grove, and George Earnshaw. Crowning the collection is the autograph of Hank Aaron, the man who ultimately eclipsed Ruthâs career home run record, bridging two eras of baseball greatness. In fine condition. Housed in a plastic case. Accompanied by a letter of authenticity from Beckett Authentication Services. Babe Ruth, Lou Gehrig, Hank Aaron, Jimmie Foxx, Al Simmons, Connie Mack, Lefty Grove, and George Earnshaw collectively embody the pantheon of Major League Baseball legends whose careers span the sportâs formative decades and its evolution into a national institution. Each figure holds a distinct place in the gameâs legacy: Ruth and Gehrig as the iconic heart of the New York Yankeesâ dominance in the 1920s and 1930s; Aaron as the embodiment of consistent excellence and the breaking of Babe Ruthâs home run record; Foxx and Simmons as prolific sluggers of the Philadelphia Athleticsâ golden years; Mack as the longest-serving and most storied manager in baseball history; and Grove and Earnshaw as dominant pitchers who shaped the Athleticsâ championship success. Together, these figures represent a cross-generational legacy that defines baseballâs golden age and its enduring mythos.
