Although the upper Oligocene lake deposit of Rott is renown for its fauna and flora, very few water plants occur among the more than 250 taxa of leaves, fruits and seeds, pollen and spores. Under investigation here are two new occurrences of aquatic macrophytes for Rott, Brasenia victoria (Nymphaeaceae) and Stratiotes kaltennordheimensis (Hydrocharitaceae). Both species occur as small seeds which were recently recovered from cores drilled at the fossillagerstätte. Due to exquisite cellular preservation, the morphological and anatomical details of the seeds, some of which are being described for the first time, could be fully studied using scanning electron microscopy. The taphonomy of the fossil seeds may account for their absence in the previously described floras from Rott. Stuttgart. E. Schweizerbart'sche Verlagsbuchhandlung (Nägele u. Obermiller). 13 pp. + 3 plates, br. folio.

Sauropods, those huge plant-eating dinosaurs, possessed bodies that seem to defy every natural law. What were these creatures like as living animals and how could they reach such uniquely gigantic sizes? A dedicated group of researchers in Germany in disciplines ranging from engineering and materials science to animal nutrition and paleontology went in search of the answers to these questions. This book reports on the latest results from this seemingly disparate group of research fields and integrates them into a coherent theory regarding sauropod gigantism. Covering nutrition, physiology, growth, and skeletal structure and body plans, this volume presents the most up-to-date knowledge about the biology of these enormous dinosaurs. [9780253355089].
