Doch wer sich etwas mehr für die pathophysiologischen Grundlagen interessiert und per Hörerschein oder sonst billiger an dieses Buch kommt, wird sicherlich seine Freude daran haben und eine Menge Wissen daraus schöpfen können. Dieses Lehrbuch ist unglaublich gut geschrieben, phantastisch illustriert und äußerst übersichtlich gegliedert. Mit diesem Buch kann man Medizin nicht nur lernen, sondern auch verstehen. Besonders ausführlich und gut beschrieben finde ich das Kapitel über den Stoffwechsel, aber auch die übrigen Kapitel stehen in nichts nach. Ein weiteres Bonbon ist im Genetik-Kapitel die graphische Darstellung sämtlicher Chromosomen mit der Topographie der darauf gelegenen Gene, für die angeborene Defekte beschrieben sind. Von einigen Dozenten wurde mir gesagt, der Siegenthaler sei inhaltlich veraltet. Vielleicht meinten sie den Stand vor der 1994er Auflage - aber wie dem auch sei, für das Grundverständnis der Medizin ist er sicherlich ohne weiters aktuell genug und so oder so ein tolles Buch. Ein sehr umfassendes Werk das auch inhaltlich hält, was der etwas hohe Preis verspricht! Das innere Layout erinnert zunächst an die Thieme-typische Konzeption á la Physikum exakt, also relativ farblose Darstellungen, die aber didaktisch umso mehr überzeugen. Was wirklich sehr gut gelungen ist, ist die Kurzeinführung zur Physiologie am Anfang jedes Kapitels. So bekommt man schnell noch einen Überblick über den "normalen Verlauf" bevor zur Pathophysiologie übergegangen wird. Man würde sich vielleicht ein paar mehr Farbabbildungen wünschen, doch dann läge der Preis womöglich noch etwas höher. They too decided to perform the same task, but they had no battery at their disposal as Davy had, so they had to form another way to chemically prepare the two elements. In 1808, they used a red-hot iron fused to potash, the water-soluble form of a manufactured salt containing potassium, to perform this task, a method that Davy admitted had its advantageous qualities. Gay-Lussac and Thénard were successful in preparing Potassium, and continued to make a full analysis of its chemical properties, and began to use it for their own experiments. In 1809, Davy performed the same task, using it to reduce Boron in Boracic acid.". …

In the course of his investigations on the combining volumes of gases he had prepared gaseous hydrogen cyanide. This led him to the study of related compounds, and in 1815 he published a paper, "Recherches sur l'acide prussique" (the paper offered), wherein he announced the discovery of cyanogen and chlor-cyanogen and the composition of hydrocyanic acid. His demonstartion that hydrogen cyanide contains no oxygen added another oxygen-free acid to those already known (hydrogen halides and sulfide) and contributed to the overthrow of Lavoisier's oxygen theory of acids.
