"Gates was one of several early geneticists who tried, unsuccessfully, to unravel the genetics of Oenothera, a particularly important botanical genus." DSB V, p. 293. He was awarded the Huxley Medal & the Mendel Medal for his efforts, but could not fully describe the genetics of Oenothera. Later in his career he moved the focus of his studies to eugenics; his most notable discovery being the gene for hairy ear rims. DSB V.
