Erstausgabe
Hardcover. Zustand: Very Good. No Jacket. 1st Edition. Thick 8vo. xiv, [2]3-280p. Translated from the French by Farrell Symons. Notes and Bibliography. Salmon colored cloth with blue letters on the front cover and the spine. Fore-edge untrimmed. Some wear to extremities, but no corners worn through, top and bottom of spine just barely starting to fray, covers very lightly soiled, else very good to near fine with no internal markings. No dust jacket. The story of ancient history's most famous pair of doomed lovers, though according to the author, only Antony, a pawn in Cleopatra's political game, could be considered the lover. "At no moment did Cleopatra cease to be mistress of herself, untiringly pursuing the plan she had framed, and the goal she had set herself. What this so-called great 'amoureuse' lacked was the love of love." Gaston Delayen [b. 1866] was a distinguished French lawyer and writer, a recipient of the Montyon Prize of the French Academy, who also wrote CICERO and THE MISADVENTURES OF MARTIN GUERRE, both also translated by Farrell Symons.

Taschenbuch. Zustand: Neu. Neuware - 'The Misadventures of Martin Guerre' explores one of the most captivating and enigmatic legal cases in French history. Set in the 16th century, the narrative follows the life of Martin Guerre, a peasant from the village of Artigues who abandoned his family and heritage, only to be replaced years later by a bold impostor. This remarkable story of identity theft and deception unfolds as Arnaud du Tilh successfully convinces Guerre's wife, family, and neighbors of his authenticity, living as Martin for several years.Gaston Delayen delves into the complexities of the subsequent trial, which became a sensation in the Parliament of Toulouse. The work examines the social and legal landscape of Renaissance France, highlighting the challenges of proving one's identity in an era before modern documentation. As the real Martin Guerre makes a dramatic reappearance during the judicial proceedings, the story reaches a gripping climax that questions the nature of truth and the fallibility of human recognition.Rich in historical detail, 'The Misadventures of Martin Guerre' is a compelling study of a man who lost his life to another and the legal battle that sought to reclaim it. It remains a foundational tale for those interested in historical true crime and French jurisprudence. This work has been selected by scholars as being culturally important, and is part of the knowledge base of civilization as we know it.
