In den Warenkorb1p, 12mo. In good condition, lightly aged. The recipient is not named. An interesting letter, indicating the relationship between two major theatrical figures in Victorian London. The main body of the letter reads: 'Dear Sir, | You really must excuse my incurring any such responsibility as that you would impose upon me. I am unable to controul Mr. Webster's actions and do not see why I should take upon myself a risk in a matter in which I have no possible interest.' Mathews has added subsequently, in a smaller hand: '(especially as my private belief is that Mr Webster never reads the pieces at all. He has at least half a dozen in hand at this moment that I know of.)'.…

In den Warenkorb3pp., 12mo. Fair, on aged paper. Mathews begins by quoting contradictory passages from letters of Charles Mathews, one from Mrs Mathews' 'Memoirs of Charles Mathews, Comedian' (1839) and the other from Bunn's 'The Stage: Both before and behind the Curtain' (1840). Regarding a performance in Dublin in 1811, the letter Mrs Mathews quotes complains that, although Mathews had been led to believe £600 would be raised, and despite a full house, 'When every account was closed, the sum-up was 470l.' In the letter quoted by Bunn, Mathews states that he never 'played to one full house in Dublin, but once, in Crow Street; and then they knocked down the door-keepers and got in for nothing. 289/., was returned for the greatest number of people ever collected in the building' Mrs Mathews has clearly taken offence at Bunn's printed comment that the account given by Mathews in the letter in his book 'does not exactly tally' with that given in the letter in her book. He attempts to placate her with a generous tribute to her husband: 'In all the relationships of life, public or private, I ever found, ever reported, & ever shall report, my departed friend, as a pattern of greatness not to be surpassed.' Bunn hopes she will permit him to pay his respects 'ere the week wanes'. In a postscript he writes: 'I had a chat with Charles about this very letter, before he started for Dublin.' At the foot of the first page Mrs Mathews notes, of the £289, 'This alludes to the first account. A M'; and along the foot of the second and third pages, 'Money was afterwards paid in which brought the total receipt to 470 | A M'.…

In den WarenkorbThe text is on one side of a 13 x 16 cm piece of laid watermarked paper. The signature 'J. Kemble' is at bottom left, in slightly-darker ink than the fifteen lines of text. Lightly aged and with short closed tears at edges of two folds. Slight traces of brown-paper mount at top corners on reverse, which carries a capable ink drawing of 'the Caducean Trident' mentioned in the text: a dragon with two sets of wings, body stiff as a rod, encircled by two snakes. The text, which has a few deletions and interpolations indicating original composition, may refer to a prop required for a dramatic production by Kemble. It reads: 'Albion, having accepted from his cousin Mercury, God of Commerce, his original Caduceus, and, from his father, Neptune, his original Trident, requested of Vulcan to new mould them, making the two into one badge of sovereign authority, symbolical of commercial supremacy and marine dominion. In compliance with this request, Vulcan produced the Caducean Trident. The Dragon is the symbol of a military marine; vigilant, swift, terrible and potent; and the Serpents are the types of the sagacity, address and prudence of Commerce, which is the source and foundation of naval power; and therefore this symbolical sceptre of Albion is in a tridental form, well at [sic] its lower as well as its upper extremity.'. …

In den WarenkorbOn three sides of a vellum bifolium supplied by the London law stationers Witherby & Co. Dimensions of leaf 39 x 26 cm. In good condition, lightly aged and creased. The document is a draft, with several emendations in pencil, including a lengthy addition in the margin of first page, and a shorter one on the second page. Laid out in customary style, within red rules. Docketed on fourth side: 'Dated 15th August 1914 | The Earl of Ducie and Others | to | The Earl of Ducie and Others | Red Cross Garden | Assignment'. With stamp of the Ecclesiastical Commissioners, signed by Hugh de Bock Porter. The document is signed by eight individuals: the Earl of Ducie, Lancelot William Bennett, Charles Stewart Loch, Mary Lumsden, Helen Ironside, Janet Johnson, Thomas Slingsby Tanner, Cecil Antony Nussey, with each of the eight signatures accompanied by that of a different witness. Eight wafer seals in red wax, on a length of green ribbon. The document refers back to the original 999-year lease of 1888, with original lessees 'the said Earl of Ducie William Waldegrave Viscount Wolmer M.P. Herbert Bulkey Mackworth Praed Robert Hunter C.B. [i.e. Sir Robert Hunter (1844-1913)] Octavia Hill and the said Helen Ironside and the said Janet Johnson'. The document explains that as Hill and Hunter (both instrumental in the foundation of the National Trust) have since died, 'the Assignors are desirous of vesting the said premises in the assignees'. Red Cross Garden was laid out in 1887 on the site of a burnt down paper factory and a derelict warehouse. With its ornamental pond, a bandstand, a covered play area for children, and colourful mosaics , the garden was the venue for the annual Southwark Flower Show, and other fetes and celebrations. The garden has recently been restored, and is now run by the Bankside Open Spaces Trust.…
