Octavo Book in just about good condition, ex-library with leather cracked and splitting at spine, corners rubbed, plates rebound in with canvas, frontis and title page backed with canvas (rather messy rebinding), library stamps to the blank pages behing the plates, pages and plates clean apart from some offsetting and a little foxing to the preliminary pages.

Brown paper covered boards. Zustand: Fair. Reprint. Worn condition. Cover rubbed and marked with loss to spine. No title page. Seventy-seven plates (all present) plus unnumbered map/view/plan, 9 x 6", later full leather, blindstamped, gilt dec covers and spine, gilt lettering, inner dentelles, aeg, marbled endpapers, xxvii (other descriptions are xxxi but nothing appears to be missing), 273 + emendations + directions to the binder. Rebacked with most of the original spine present, covers have light rubbing and scuffing, ink name stamp (E.F. Hodgdon), frontis, lacks a couple of tissue guards, some of the plates misnumbered, scattered spotting else very good condition. According to the NUC this edition is one volume only not two volumes in one as listed in other descriptions. The pagination in this title is continuous, not separated into two parts.

First Edition of the first definitive work on Pompeii in English, by the British classical archeologist William Gell in collaboration with British architect J. P. Gandy. "Despite the importance of Pompeii, and the fact that excavations had been going on for half a century, no authoritative account of the site was presented to English readers until 1817 when Gell published Pompeiana . . . Gell prepared the illustrations for Pompeiana on site with the camera lucida, an instrument that enabled the draftsman to trace an image onto paper, thereby controlling scale and dimension. John Peter Gandy, who had accompanied Gell on the Ionian Expedition, wrote most of the text but with reliance on Gell's research. Pompeiana was beautifully printed and heavily illustrated with high-quality engravings and numerous vignettes, mostly from Gell's drawings. Tipped in to the front endpaper is an obituary notice for Hannah Gandy, hand-dated 1902. Hannah Gandy was the niece of the author of this work. His best-known work is Pompeiana; the Topography, Edifices and, Ornaments of Pompeii, published between 1817 and 1832, in the first part of which he was assisted by J. P. Gandy. It was followed in 1834 by the Topography of Rome and its Vicinity. He wrote also Topography of Troy and its Vicinity (1804); Geography and Antiquities of Ithaca (1807); Itinerary of Greece, with a Commentary on Pausanias and Strabo (1810); and Itinerary of the Morea (1816). Although these works have been superseded by later publications, they continue to provide valuable information for the study of classical topography.John Peter Gandy was a British architect. From 1811 to 1813 he accompanied Sir William Gell as his architectural draughtsman on an expedition to Greece on behalf of the Society of Dilettanti. The write-up of the trip was published in 1817 as "The Unedited Antiquities of Attica", and in 1840 as the third volume of "Antiquities of Ionia", edited by William Wilkins. Gell and Gandy also published "Pompeiana" (1817?19), a work which came to be the standard work on the excavations at Pompeii., Size : 4to, 73 steel engraved plates, and 10 plans and maps.
