There are two islands each where they are safely protected from their enemies. The playing pieces are made out of paper with embossed images of war ships and air planes, in beige (air power) and blue (sea power) colours.

This is brightly coloured post-war sugoroku is a "round the world" game and this together with the fukuwarai game printed on the reverse would have been enjoyed by Japanese families during the new year celebrations. The ga…me, which is colourfully illustrated, covers East Asia, Southeast Asia, New Guinea, Africa, Europe, and North and South Americas with the final goal being returning to Japan and visiting the Royal Palace in Tokyo. The game was probably printed in the 1960s when overseas travel by jet plane was regarded as a possible dream for many Japanese people. On the reverse is a fukuwarai (happy-laughter) game where a blind-folded player places eyes, nose, mouth and other pieces on the faces outlined.

A ball-bearing game, a more light-hearted variant of the same manufacturer's earlier 'Silver Bullet', in which the formation of players blocking your route to goal consists of the Kaiser's son 'Little Willie'… and various prominent German military figures: Von Terpitz, Von Kluck, Von Bulow, Von Hindenburg, Von Der Goltz, Von Moltke, Enver Pasha, Von Sanders, and Count Zeppelin - all of whom shown in hapless postures, before the large gaping mouth of the Kaiser himself provides the final obstacle. The label to the rear purports to outline the rules, but is really an exercise in propaganda, casting aspersions not only on the sporting ability and fairness of the opposition, but their intelligence and sanity.

Twenty-six spaces spiral around the title in a classic ' jeu de l'oie ' or 'game of the goose' model. A 'wonders of nature' occupies each space. A…mong these are Mount Etna (1), an earthquake (3), the Cave of Antiparos (14), Niagara Falls (20), and the Lofoten Maelstrom (24). The Jeux de l'Oie The jeux de l'oie or game of the goose, originated in Italy during the late 16th century. The game follows a traditional spiral form with most games consisting of sixty-three squares (although there are exceptions). Players progress along the spiral to the center of the board. Along the way, players encounter hazards, bonuses, and penalties. As explained by game historian Adrian Seville Each game goes beyond simple cartographic representation to convey, through its rules or iconography, a deliberate 'message' whether political, commercial, or cultural. The games give insights into international relationships, perceptions, and misconceptions at various points in the history of Europe. A brilliantly-colored game from the early Meiji, this c. 1870 ukiyo-e sugoroku sheet reflects the interests of the times, focusing on foreign countries and modern naval technology. A Closer Look T…he sheet includes various countries, which serve as sugoroku tiles, each with a description of the country's history, political system, and capital. Illustrations depict major cities, important historical figures, or dress and customs. Modern ships - paddle steamers - also make frequent appearances. Kana accompanies kanji throughout, reflecting the intended audience of children and common people. The countries represented are, moving in rows from left to right and starting at top-left, are: Britain (with a depiction of London) Japan itself The United States of America (using the highly unusual transliteration ???) France (with a portrait of Napoleon) Belgium The Netherlands Russia (also a somewhat unusual translation as ???) Austria Prussia Denmark Sweden Greece Spain Switzerland Italy Portugal Yokohama China Sugoroku Geography Lesson This sheet was intended for sugoroku , more specifically e-sugoroku (???). Historically, there are two variants of sugoroku , one that is similar to backgammon, and the presently offered 'snakes and ladders' variant. This version of the game appeared as early as the 13th century, and was popularized by the rise of printing technology, especially in the Edo and Meiji periods, leading to the production of high-quality visually-arresting gameboards. A standard sugoroku board has a starting point, the furi-dashi (??), and a winding or spiral path terminating at the agari (??) or finish-line. Here Yokohama is marked as the furi-dashi at bottom, while the agari is Japan itself (Dai Nippon), represented by four colorfully-clad women before Mt. Fuji. The gameplay itself, not unlike 'snakes and ladders,' is a race to the finish. Many sugoroku had an educational or didactic purpose and were geared towards inculcating patriotism and good morals in children, especially in the Meiji period. The Height of Meiji Cartographic Art Stylistically, this sheet represents the height of the Meiji-era (1868 - 1912) print tradition - wherein western styles, techniques, and imported inks, were combined with Ukiyo-e color traditions and aesthetic values. It falls in a printing lineage that begins with the Meiji Restoration and continues through about 1895, defined by vivid color achieved in part by using imported German-made inks. This style began to fall out of fashion near the turn of the century, when it was supplanted by lithographic printing and more reserved color. Publication History and Census This game board was drawn by Ochiai Keisai (????) and engraved by ?miya Ky?jir? (??????), with text by Takeda Ikamaru (????). It was edited by Kanagaki Robun (?????), a noted writer and journalist of the late Tokugawa and early Meiji periods. It is undated, but given the content, style, and reference to Yokohama, it likely dates from the very late Edo or early Meiji period, c. 1870. This work has no known presence in institutional collections and is very scarce to the market.

A rare 1932 Showa 7 Japanese manga world map and sugoroku game board. The map celebrates Japanese curiosity about the world and its peoples, but at the same time, hints darkly at imperial a…mbitions. A Closer Look Centered on Japan (and mount Fuji) the map covers the entire world. Manga vignettes illustrate Japanese people exploring the world and interacting with people and places throughout. The vignettes address stereotypes, but are generally inoffensive, focusing instead on flora, fauna, sports, and industry. Dirigibles are prominent throughout - highlighting the popularity of this form of air-transportation before the 1937 Hindenburg disaster. Nonetheless, despite the game board's superficial playfulness, there is an undertone of war. An American aircraft carrier and battleship sits ready off the coast of San Diego and the Hawaiian islands are presented as an American fort with big cannons pointing towards Japan - which is deceptively close. Japan Finds a Place on the Global Stage This map illustrates Japan's emergence from an insular feudal nation to a rising power on the world's social, military, and economic stage. The arrival of Commodore Perry and forced opening of Japan in 1853 transformed Japan's vision of itself, breaking the illusion that it was the sole repository of civilization, and underscoring the truth that it was indeed well behind western powers. What followed was the Meiji Restoration, a major reorganization of government, a reassertion of imperial power, and a drive towards aggressive industrial and social modernization. Japan's victory over Imperial Russia in the Russo-Japanese War (1904 - 1905) marked the first major victory in war by an Asian power over a European Power, an achievement that established Japan as a modern global power. Sugoroku The essence of the game, generally known as simplified sugoroku , is akin to the western board game, snakes and ladders. Historically there are two variants of sugoroku , one that is similar to backgammon, and the presently offered 'snakes and ladders' variant. A rare aviation-themed chromolithograph game board highlighting the global fascination with aviation int the early 20th century. This is an extremely rare c. 1912 Léon Saussine pictorial map or game board of an airplane voyage around the world. The map serv…es as the board for a jeu de parcours (journey game), which snakes around the world, beginning and ending in France. Along the route, vignettes of adventures (and misadventures) decorate the board. Several present problems, including getting tangled in telegraph lines, crashing in the sea, and suffering a mid-air collision. Others depict the highlights: the pyramids at Giza, exotic landscapes, and harassing a farmer and his sheep. A steam locomotive appears in one of the vignettes. The adventure (and the game) ends back in France, with a view of the Eiffel Tower. Chromolithography Chromolithography is a color lithographic technique developed in the mid-19th century. The process involved using multiple lithographic stones, one for each color, to yield a rich composite effect. Oftentimes, the process would start with a black basecoat upon which subsequent colors were layered. Some chromolithographs used 30 or more separate lithographic stones to achieve the desired product. Chromolithograph color could also be effectively blended for even more dramatic results. The process became extremely popular in the late 19th and early 20th centuries, when it emerged as the dominate method of color printing. The vivid color chromolithography produced made it exceptionally effective for advertising and propaganda imagery. We have been unable to locate any examples in institutional collections. A rare opportunity.
