Octavo,168 pp.,colour photographs, map. A total of 133 species of orchid have been recorded in Hong Kong. For the first time, this book compiles images and data on all 97 extant local species in the format of a full-colour, easy-to-use, quick reference field guide. With growing appreciation for the importance of a healthy and resilient ecosystem to support and enrich our lives, it is hoped that A Guide to Orchids of Hong Kong will inspire respect for these natural treasures and strengthen the resolve to protect the breathtaking landscapes in which they occur. South China was once home to vast subtropical forests that stretched from the eastern Himalayas to Indochina and beyond, a region of phenomenal biological diversity now undergoing rapid urbanisation and human population growth. Sadly, tens of thousands of orchids are harvested from the remaining forest fragments each year to fuel the horticultural and medicinal plants trade.

Soft cover. Zustand: New. 168 pp., illustrations, bibliography, index. Like the tiger, saola, Irrawaddy dolphin and giant ibis, orchids have become an icon for the conservation of this biodiversity hotspot. The tiny territory of Hong Kong at its far eastern margin is a microcosm of its irreplaceable diversity and conservation needs. A total of 133 species of orchid have been recorded in Hong Kong. Laos is a landlocked country that lies at the heart of the Indo-Burma Biodiversity Hotspot, one of the world s most biodiverse and most threatened eco-regions. Until a few decades ago, virtually the entire country was clothed in tropical lowland and montane forest, a natural heritage that had enriched its culture and economy from its birth in the 14th century as the Land of a Million Elephants and the White Parasol. But local, regional and global demand for timber, wildlife, agricultural products and mineral resources has drastically modified the landscape of the Lower Mekong Basin. Protecting remaining tracts of intact natural forest to ensure ecological resilience and conserve biodiversity has become correspondingly important. Appreciating the intricate beauty and documenting the astonishing richness of life in Laos natural areas are vital parts of this process, and to study the country s orchids is an exercise in both. To date, 683 orchid species have been recorded in Laos, accounting for more than 13% of its known flora, and this list will undoubtedly grow. This handy guide book to these amazing plants provides succinct descriptions and full colour photographs to a selection of 125 native species, introducing the reader to the key morphological and ecological features that distinguish them. Variously specialised to practically all habitats, orchids have the power to captivate curious minds, unveil the workings of evolution and serve as a flagship for conservation in Laos and the wider region.

Hardcover. Zustand: Very Good. 715 pp., illustrations, diagrams, bibliography, index. The cultivation and medicinal use of orchids are Chinese traditions that date back millennia, but scientific documentation of southeast China's native orchids commenced with the establishment of European trade bases at Macau in the 16th Century and at Guangzhou in the 18th Century. João de Loureiro, a Portuguese missionary, collected Pecteillis susannae and Spiranthes sinensis during his visit to these enclaves from 1779-1782 and John Dampier Parks, a collector for the Horticultural Society of London, sent back specimens of Coelogyne fimbriata and Robiquetia succisa from the region in the 1820s. The earliest survey of orchids on Hong Kong Island is attributed to Dr. Clarke Abel, naturalist abord HMS Alceste during Lord Amherst's ill-fated diplomatic mission to the court of the Qing Dynast in 1816, when he botanised the lower slopes of what was to become know as Mt. Victoria. The island was formally ceded to the United Kingdom following the Treaty of Nanking in 1842, and the Kowloon Peninsula and New Territories were added to the colony in 1860 and 1898 respectively. A century of exploration ensued: over 40 new orchids were named from plants collected within the territory, and even in the short period that has elapsed since its return to Chinese rule, Hong Kong's narrow valleys and precipitous summits have continued to yield novelties. Collabiam chinense and Vanilla schnzhenica were added to the list of native orchids as recently as 1998. In total, 126 species and varieties representing all five orchid subfamilies have been recorded from Hong Kong, a staggering figure given its diminutive size. Hong Kong's landscape has changed dramatically throughout its history, and emphasis is increasingly placed on developing an understanding of the plants' ecology in order to ensure their persistence for future generations. This book provides descriptions and discusses the discovery of all the native species, and the conservation status of each is assessed.
