First edition of Gaffarel's opus magnum on Jewish Astrology, Kabbalah, and various magical beliefs, illustrated with two folding celestial maps. "Curiositez inouyes" is Gaffarel's most important and influential work, dealing with Oriental Talismans, Hebrew, Egyptian and Arabic Astrology, the Kabbalah and star reading. The book is divided into three parts, of which the first is devoted to defending the orientals, especially the Jews against several classic calumnies, the second is a defense of Persian talismanic sculpture and astrology and the third concerns the horoscope of the Patriarchs and the Astrology of the Ancient Hebrews. The book includes two folding celestial maps, or Cabalistic planispheres, where the constellations form Hebrew letters, which could be read by those with the right knowledge. Jacques Gaffarel (16011681) was a French priest, Orientalist, and astrologer, one of the chief exponents of 17th-century Christian Kabbalism. Born in Provence educated at the Universities of Valence and Paris where he received the degree of Doctor of canon law. Gaffarel became the librarian of Cardinal Richelieu, and as a scholar of Oriental languages, he defended the Kabbalah against the critical treatment of the contemporary Christian scholars. . With the bookplate of Louis Vignet on the inner front panel. A tiny letter "B" in ink on title page. Words underlined in red pencil throughout. The paper toned, with some occasional foxing. 2G4 slightly overtrimmed that effects the upper letters of the chart on its recto. A small hole on 2R3 by an inkblot with loss of a letter on both sides. Terza edizione, dopo la prima del 1629 e la seconda del 1631. Esemplare completo in tutto, anche delle due tavole ripiegate in fine, una delle quali illustra l'alfabeto celeste, una visualizzazione della corrispondenza tra l'alfabeto ebraico e le costellazioni, concezione in base alla quale Gaffarel spiegava sia il Vecchio che il Nuovo Testamento e gli accadimenti storici: una sorta di personalissima gematria a livello linguistico che si inserisce con grande originalità nella storia del pensiero sulla Kabbala e approda alla concezione che i Cieli possono essere letti come un libro. In questo libro l'autore difendeva la serietà e il valore di varie dottrine filosofiche e mistiche dell'Oriente, che, avendo subito aspre riprovazioni, egli dovette sconfessare più volte pubblicamente due volte. Gaffarel riesce in questo volume ad unire i saperi astrologici, magici e divinatorii, soffermandosi sui talismani persiani in relazione alla magia naturale, che egli derivava principalmente dal suo amato Pico della Mirandola. Si tratta pertanto di un libro maggiore tra quelli classificati come esoterici e che si colloca in un'epoca insospettabile come antesignano all'apertura di un dialogo tra le varie culture che approda ad una adesione al sapere orientale che diviene nutrimento di quello occidentale. Gaffarel (1601-1681), theolog, was the librarian to Cardinal Richelieu. Around 1623 Gaffarel travelled to Italy where he acquired a.o. the Kabbala manuscripts of Giovanni Pico della Mirandola. This work comprises four parts; the first part defends "the Oriental men", part two treats the use of talismans or amulets in ancient times; the third part deals with the ancient Hebrew astrology and the last part is about reading messages in the stars. Gaffarel then describes the "celestial writing" or arrangement of stars into Hebrew characters. This is illustrated in the two plates. First published in 1629, reprinted many times and translated into English in 1650.
