Hardcover. Zustand: New. Dardistan is one of the most diverse linguistic regions in the world. In the 1930s, the Norwegian linguist Georg Morgenstierne called it one of the most polyglot parts of Asia. More recently, the Italian anthropologist Augusto Cacopardo has called it 'Peristan', an area with an 'enormous diversity of tongues and cultures'. The region has the large Dardic languages such as Kashmiri, Shina and Khowar on the one hand and, on the other, it is home to the Burushaski language, which could not be placed within any language family because of its unique features. The Nuristani, formerly Kafiri, languages are spoken here, too. There are minor languages such as Kalasha, spoken by the Kalash community of hardly 4,000 people who still follow the ancient animistic religion that was once practised across Dardistan. The name 'Dardistan' describes the area comprising the highest mountain ranges of Hindu Kush, Karakoram, western Himalaya and the Pamir mountains, and includes northern Pakistan, parts of Eastern Tibet in China, eastern Afghanistan and the Kashmir valley on both sides of the Pakistan-India border.

Hardcover. Zustand: New. The Book Dardistan refers to a region where Dardic languages are spoken. The terms "Dardic" and "Dardistan" are not indigenous to the region, and were coined by Gottlieb Wilhelm Leitner. The legitimacy of the term has been called into question. The region also includes a number of non-Dardic peoples and languages. The initial efforts by the British grouped almost all the people and languages of the upper Indus River, between Kashmir and Kabul, into a single category. This led to the creation of distinct identities for all other groups in the region, giving rise to terms such as Dard, Dardistan, and Dardic.

Hardcover. Zustand: New. "Dardistan, situated between the frontiers of Kashmir and Afghanistan, is mentioned in Greek and Roman texts. Many Greek and Roman writers such as Arrian, Strabo, Alexandrius, and Pliny the Elder have described the region in their respective accounts. The ancient Gandhara was located in this region. However, this region came into much prominence under the British. This work by Leitner is an ethnographical study of the region in the late nineteenth century. The first half of the account covers various legends, customs, and songs composed in the region, which were mostly composed in Shina, a dialect spoken in Kashmir Valley. Folklores containing demons, customs, old fables, manners, etc., are covered. The author touches upon different aspects of human life, birth ceremonies, marriage, funeral, holidays, and also different governments formed in this region. Special emphasis is given to areas like Gilgit, Yasin, Chitral, Nagyr, Hunza, etc. Chronology of the history of Dards, wars against Kashmir, etc., is mentioned. Another important aspect covered is the religions, geog¬raphy, castes, and races of the Dardistan. The latter half has appen¬dices containing various events in Chilas and Chitrals, languages, anthropological observations, sciences, and secret religions practiced in the region. About the Author G.W. Leitner (1840-1899) was a Hungarian born British Orientalist and a linguist. He studied Turkish, Arabic, and other languages, and was appointed as the interpreter to the British commissariat in Crimea. He was also appointed as a professor in Arabic and Islamic law at King s College, London. He became the principal of Government College University, Lahore in 1864, and was the pioneer to establish the Uni¬versity of the Punjab, Lahore in 1882 and became a registrar.

In den WarenkorbPaperback. Zustand: New. Language: English. About the Book:- The book discusses the history of contact of two types of education systems; English and Panjabi. The author highlights the failure of British in preserving original education system of Panjab, despite the benefit of experience with other provinces. The indigenous education of Panjab was crippled, checked, and was nearly destroyed; how opportunities for its healthy revival were either neglected or perverted; and how, far beyond the blame attaching to individuals, British system stands convicted of worse than a failure. The author discusses the education system of Panjab and how everybody used to go to school. Every Mosque, Temple or Guruduara had a school attached to it and was supported by Lahore Darbar. There were over 330,000 pupils in the schools while Panjab was ruled by Lahore Darbar, and there were just 190,000 in 1883, under British. The book describes the rich education system of Panjab before annexation. The author confesses that British have changed everything. It further describes how the annexation disturbed the minds of believers in Providence, and all that was respectable kept, as much as possible, aloof from the invader, just as the best Englishmen would not be the first to seek favour of a foreign conqueror. At the same time, the single-mindedness of the English officials in the Panjab, and the religious earnestness destroyed education system of Panjab. about the Author:- Gottlieb Wilhelm Leitner (14 October 1840 22 March 1899), also known as Gottlieb William Leitner, was a British orientalist. As a child Leitner showed an extraordinary ability in languages. At the age of eight he went to Constantinople to learn Arabic and Turkish, and by the age of ten he was fluent in Turkish, Arabic and most European languages. At fifteen, he was appointed Interpreter (First Class) to the British Commissariat in the Crimea, with the rank of colonel. When the Crimean War ended, he wanted to become a priest and went to study at King's College London. It is also reported that during his tour of Muslim countries he adopted a Muslim name of Abdur Rasheed Sayyah. Sayyah in Arabic means a traveller. As a linguist, he is said to have had acquaintance with some fifty languages, many of which he spoke fluently.
