Comprehensive reference for household education, including science, literature, the arts, etc., illustrated with engraved plates. Rust colored textured cloth lettered and decorated in gilt and black, 510 pages plus publisher's 1879 catalogue at rear. Light rubbing to the extremities, gilt bright and clear, good hinges, text block damaged as described, plates a little age-darkened, pages clean and free from names or other markings. First Edition. Hard Cover. Fair/No. 8vo - over 7¾" - 9¾" tall.

Zustand: Very good. First Edition. Oddly rare 19th-century household reference book in a beautiful publisher's binding. Stated eighteenth edition, but OCLC locates no other editions of this title, so this was likely a marketing tactic to increase the impression of the book's popularity. OCLC finds only four worldwide holdings of the physical book: one in Canada and three in the U.S. An extensively illustrated general encyclopedia for popular consumption, which includes "whole chapters upon" subjects including Fine Arts, Jurisprudence, Vegetable Creation, Animal Creation, Mineralogy, Chronology, and more; edited by "The Ablest Talent the World Affords." 9'' x 6.5''. Publisher's original stemped and gilt decorative red cloth. 514 pages/ Very good. Modest scuffs, edgewear to boards. Pages moderately to foxed throughout, but complete and unmarked. Binding cracked at several points; mostly good and sound throughout.
