English text.; Paperback.; 18.5 x 24 cm.; 0.3 Kg.; 90 pages with introductory text, followed by list of the 152 exhibited works and images of the each of the works.; Used with signs of wear on the exterior and interior.; Catalogue from an Exhibition of National Art Treasures of Korea lent by… the government of the republic of Korea held at the Victoria and Albert Museum, from 23 March to 7 May, 1961, which included gold crown and ornaments, gold and gilt bronze statues, decorated tiles and paving bricks, pottery and porcelain, and paintings.; "The Exhibition of National Art Treasures of Kore is a unique event. Not only does it comprise works which form part of the heritage of the Korean nation and cannot be matched by examples in public or private collections elsewhere, but it is the first exhibition of Korean art ever to be held in England. Although of great artistic and cultural importance, the arts of Korea have been largely neglected by students in this country: they are less familiar than those of China and Japan, being poorly represented in our national collections, nor has any illustrated publication been readily available to demonstrate their quality and significance. This short introduction is aimed to serve as a background and to help visitors to place in perspective the 152 exhibits of gold, bronze, pottery and painting of various periods which are now assembled, thanks to the generosity of the Government of the republic of Korea. Of these exhibits, 101 were among those which toured museums and art galleries in America from 1957 to 1959, and 51 are new items which have never before left Korea." excerpt from the introduction by G. St. G. M. Gompertz.

Good readable/working copy.; "Unlike that of China, the medieval pottery of Korea was not widely exported at the time, and remained completely forgotten till its rediscovery through unsystematic excavation of tombs and other early sites in Korea within the last sixty years. The Koryo celadons were first introduced to an English public through the fine collection which Aubrey Le Blond acquired during a visit to Korea in 1915 and deposited first on loan, then as a permanent gift, at the Victoria and Albert Museum. Bernard Rackham's Catalogue of this Collection (1918) remains valuable for its detailed descriptions. The discerning collectors who were then beginning to explore the field of early Chinese ceramics were inevitably attracted by the Koryo wares, so evidently related to, yet so strangely dissimilar from, the Sung celadons. Two appreciative essays by the late W. B. Honey, of which the first appeared in the author's Ceramic Art of China and Other Countries of the Far East (1945), at last convincingly stated the claim of the Koryo celadons to stand 'as one of the summits of all ceramic achievement'. Honey developed this theme in an early volume of the present series (Corean Pottery, 1947), a book which aroused wide interest among contemporary artist-potters, and which also contained a brief notice of the still little-understood white porcelains of the Yi period. Since 1957, with the active co-operation of the Korean Government, many of the finest extant examples of Korean art have been exhibited in the United States of America and in Europe. It has also become apparent that experts in the Far East have for a generation past been hard at work on the historical and archaeological aspects of an art to which they bring exacting aesthetic standards of their own. During many years' residence in the Far East, Mr. Gompertz had exceptional opportunities to familiarize himself with writings and opinions of Oriental scholars and fellow-collectors that were not readily accessible to students in the West. It is hoped that his present book will help to relate aesthetic appreciation of the Koryo wares to a background of historical and factual knowledge hitherto lacking in this country. In an earlier volume of the Series (Chinese Celadon Wares, 1958) Mr. Gompertz has already drawn fruitful comparisons between Eastern and Western appreciation of the Sung and Yuan wares that were roughly contemporary with those of the Koryo period." foreword.

The dust jacket is protected with a clearcover.; Celadon is the name given to ceramic wares of a distinctive green or blue-green colour. Such wares have been made in China for about two thousand years and include some of the most admired and famous types. They have been described as the "backbone" of Oriental ceramics and were exported from China in vast quantities from the twelfth century onwards, relics of this trade being found in many Eastern countries, especially India, Persia, Turkey, and Egypt. Godfrey Gompertz's widely acclaimed book broke much fresh ground when it originally appeared, in particular in its use of contemporary Chinese and Japanese studies. He has now brought it completely up to date for this new edition, and has incorporated the results of many years' researches and of recent archaeological excavations in China. Several chapters have been rewritten, forty-six new black and white illustrations and six new colour plates have been added, and the bibliography has been expanded.; ".A much needed survey of the subject as a whole - scholarly yet readable, and the first of its kind in the West, which will be welcomed by collectors and students alike.an uncommonly valuable synthesis of up-to-date opinion and research. No less to be recommended are its excellent illustrations among which are pieces drawn from collections in every part of the world." John Ayers in Apollo (review of the first edition).

English text.; Hardcover (with dust jacket).; 16 x 25.5.; 0.8 kg.; 106 pages plus 120 illustrations (black and white and a few in colour).; Used with signs of wear on the dust jacket, namely minor edge wear and wear marks, scuffs and scratches on the front cover, spine… and back cover. The dust jacket is price clipped and has some black pen writing at the bottom of the rear of the front cover. Remaining interior in very good condition with minor signs of wear.; Korean pottery and porcelain of the Yi period, which lasted for over five hundred years, has suffered even more neglect than the earlier celadon wares whose fame has grown so much in recent years. Yet discerning critics like the sixteenth-century Tea Masters and the modern Folk Art Society in Japan as well as many contemporary studio potters both in the East and West have recognized the unique qualities of what an American potter has considered 'among the most ruggedly beautiful pottery which has been made anywhere'. In the words of the late W. B. Honey, Keeper of Ceramics at the Victoria and Albert Museum, 'we should pay a tribute of wonder and gratitude, even of awe, to those obscure Far Eastern potters who created these masterpieces.' The Yi period wares have exercised tremendous influence on Japanese pottery from the sixteenth century onwards, and a whole library of works on the subject has appeared in Japan. Mr Gompertz has made full use of this great reservoir of studies, research and connoisseurship in producing the only comprehensive study in any Western language. In addition, he has examined the historical and literary records of the Yi dynasty and has conducted personal investigations at the principal kiln sites in Korea and visited the leading public and private Far Eastern collections. The illustrations have been carefully selected to show all the chief types of ware and include outstanding specimens from many parts of the world. The result is a book which will inevitably become the standard work on the subject. Its value is enhanced by several sketch-maps showing the main kiln sites as well as photographs and diagrams of pottery kilns and workshops and an exhaustive annotated bibliography.
