Hardcover. 8vo. Brown cloth, dust jacket. 368pp. Frontispiece, illustrations, pictorial endpapers. Very good/very good. Early but not first printing and an extraordinary association copy: Inner flyleaf bears the large pencilled ownership signature of Adlai Stevenson's sister, Elizabeth Ives, and another inner flyleaf bears a fine presentation inscription by the author in blue ink: "To Mrs. Ernest Ives / As an historic item of / special interest to you in / this campaign year 1952. / With best wishes, / Bess Furman / Washington, D.C. / Sept. 22, '52." On pages 256-258 Ives' grandfather appears -- Adlai E. Stevenson I, U.S. vice president under Cleveland -- and alongside the text Ives has made a few pencil rules. Elizabeth "Buffie" Stevenson Ives (1898-1994) was the sole sibling of the governor and was involved in his first presidential bid at the time. Quite an unusual copy.
