Hardcover. Zustand: Good. SHAKESPEARE AND THE LAW OF NATIONS FIRST EDITIONS of the second and third titles, second of the first. 4to. ff. (xii) 104 (viii), (viii) 74 (viii), (iv) 90. Three works in one, separate title page to each. Roman letter, woodcut initials and ornaments, contemporary manuscript statutory references at head of first title page, fly with early case mark (that and next blank loose), Earl's C19 armorial bookplate on pastedown. A few margins slightly dusty in places; good, crisp, clean copies in contemporary calf, ruled and panelled in blind, minor repair to joints at foot of spine. Fulbecke (1560-1616), dramatist, lawyer, legal writer and historian was educated at Oxford and then Gray's Inn where he practised. His legal writings have long been highly regarded but he has been attracting renewed interest as the author of Shakespeare sourcebooks. It is likely that Fulbecke and Shakespeare were acquainted through one of the Inns of Court plays, masques or revels, in which it is believed both were involved. There is evidence that Shakespeare was acquainted with at least two of Fulbecke's works, an acquaintance discernible particularly in King Lear. That apart, Fulbecke was one of the first pioneers in the field of comparative and international law, especially the first English writer to deal with them in English. Most previous works on those topics, from wherever, had been written in Latin, indeed even on the common law which until Fulbecke's influential comparative work had remained sturdily impervious to the influence of other legal systems. But the most significant text here is the 'Pandectes', the earliest substantive original contribution in English to the law of nations, now more commonly known as 'public international law'. "What Fulbecke appeared to be doing in his introduction of these controversial issues was suggesting a need for compromise. No doubt he realized the issue of authority was a critical problem that would probably escalate further upon the death of the Queen. His arguments were an idealistic attempt to please the various groups concerned. He took political ideas from men of such opposing views as Sir John Fortescue and Jean Bodin and developed them into a theory of authority. He attempted to check the power of the monarch further, not by emphasizing parliament's role, but rather by giving the common law an independent status and associating it with the law of reason. Finally he resolved the debate over the origins of the common law by offering a moderate opinion. Overwhelmingly, the mood of compromise created in the introduction was carried over into the dialogues". Terrill "The Application of the Comparative Method by English Civilians", Journal of Legal History 1981 II p. 177. STC 11416, 11415(a) (issue with errata) and 11414 (issue without errata). Lowndes II 845. English.

First Edition. 4to, pp.[xvi], '20' (recte209), [7], with the initial and medial blanks *1 and A4 (often wanting); early inscription to title-page sometime obscured, title-page slightly toned; withal a fine, crisp copy in contemporary limp vellum, spine lettered in manuscript, original ties (lower tie partly lacking); contemporary annotation to a rear endpaper concerning 'the divers and disagring [sic] opinions of histrographers It hapineth in ye originall of Kings, as of great rivers whose mouthes are knowne, but not ther springs?.First edition of Fulbecke's Historicall Collection, a 'narrative history of the last years of the Roman republic' (ODNB), one of very few such works by a Renaissance English writer, featuring much material on the rebellion of the nobleman Catiline, undoubtedly included as a reference to the Earl of Essex. Dedicated to Thomas Sackville, Lord Buckhurst and published immediately following Essex's trial and execution in February 1601 despite the fact that 'fourteene years are now runne out since I fully ended and dispatched this historicall labour' (preface) the Historicall Collection is 'an interesting attempt to weave together such often-contradictory sources as Sallust, Dio Cassius, and Lucius Florus' and is 'full of the sorts of fears of unrest and civil dissension that characterize the literature of Elizabeth's last years' (ibid.). For Essex, contemporary comparisons to Catiline are practically a cliché, and Fulbecke took some liberties with his source here, Sallust, to overstretch the similarities between Essex and Catiline. At around the time he originally wrote the Collection, Fulbecke was a student at the Inns of Court, and along with a number of his contemporaries, including Francis Bacon, wrote a masque, The Misfortunes of Arthur, which was performed before Elizabeth I at Greenwich in 1588; Fulbecke contributed two speeches and the conclusion. It is plausible that Fulbecke and Shakespeare were acquainted through the Inns of Court plays, in which both were involved, and there is some evidence that Shakespeare may have read Fulbecke's books, or have been familiar with their content. ESTC S102772; STC 11412. Some copies (e.g.Folger and Corpus Christi Oxford) have a Latin version of the dedication on *3, and *4 excised. The work was reissued in 1608 with cancel title-page (An Abridgement, or rather, a Bridge of Roman Histories) and most or all of the preliminaries removed (presumably because of Sackville's death in April). Language: English.

London, 1829. Second edition, Revised (illustrator). London, 1829. Second edition, Revised. Advice for Law Students Fulbeck(e), William [1560-1603]. Stirling, T.H., Editor. A Direction or Preparative to the Study of the Law: Wherein is Shewed, What Things Ought to be Observed and Used of Them That Are Addicted to the Study of the Law, And What, on the Contrary Part, Ought to be Eschewed and Avoided. Second Edition, Revised. London: Printed for J. and W.T. Clarke, 1829. [viii], 252 pp. Two folding tables. Octavo (7-1/4" x 4-1/4") Recent period-style quarter calf over cloth, raised bands and lettering piece to spine, speckled edges, endpapers renewed. Moderate toning to text, light foxing in places. An appealing copy. $750. * Second nineteenth-century edition, the third and final overall. Fulbeck was a bencher at Gray's Inn. First published in 1600 and reissued in 1620, his Direction or Preparative was intended as a vade mecum for aspiring law students. It was "revised and republished" by Stirling in 1809; the 1829 edition is Stirling's "second edition, revised." The first book of its kind, it offers a mix of practical information and advice on personal conduct. (For example, he advises students not to study at night "for when the stomach is full and stuffed with meat, the abundance of humours is carried to the head, where it sticketh for a time and layeth as it were a lump of lead upon the brain.") For the most part Fulbeck restricts his thoughts to rhetorical techniques, methods for preparing a case, recommended readings and other topics. Though often read for amusement, this treatise remains an incomparable guide to English legal education and the legal culture of the Inns of Court during the Elizabethan era.
