This book tells the story of three visits to Russia made by Fry in her position as general secretary of the Quaker Relief Committee, made in the years following the Revolution and Civil War. This was a period of experiment, and Fry's observations of the children's homes, schools, prisons and other institutions of the time shed light on the early years of Soviet rule.
