Trade paperback. Zustand: Good. x, [2], 216 [8] pages. Frontis illustration. Cover has some wear and soiling. Signed by the author. on the title page. Michael Dirda (born 1948) is a book critic for the Washington Post. He has been a Fulbright Fellow and won a Pulitzer Prize in 1993. Having studied at Oberlin College for his unde…rgraduate degree in 1970, Dirda took an M.A. in 1974 and Ph.D. in 1977 from Cornell University in comparative literature. In 1978 Dirda started writing for the Washington Post; in 1993 he won the Pulitzer Prize for his criticism. Currently, he is a book columnist for the Post. This volume collects Dirda's popular column published in the Washington Post Book World in the 1990s. Throughout, Dirda shares his passion for reading with humor, scholarship, and imagination. He's full of ideas about what to read next, and brings lively infatuation to the art of the book review. Derived from a Kirkus review: A delightful compendium of Dirda's most memorable Washington Post Book World essays revels in seven years' worth of bibliophilic passion. Although the 46 "literary entertainments" collected here range widely in topic and in tone, Dirda's hearty enthusiasm and good-natured bookishness stands at the forefront of his writing. From pulp fiction to serious literature, children's books to erotica, ghost stories to classics in translation, Dirda appears to have read more booksand to remember them in awe-inspiring detailthan most libraries contain. Many of the essays contain lists of little-known and forgotten novels with brief synopses of their contents, and these simple gifts leave one breathless with reverence for the man who read, recommended, and loved these countless titles. Dirda's erudition is obvious throughout. His response to required reading in high school and his hilarious suggestions to encourage children to read by forbidding them the classics reveal a man whose tongue may be firmly in his cheek but whose heart and mind never seem to stray from the joys of the printed word. The the joy of Dirda's opinions lies in letting the voice and wit of a true bibliophile into your head. First Paperback Edition [stated]. First Printing [stated]. Trade paperback. Zustand: Very Good. No dust jacket issued. First Printing [Stated]. xiii, [1], 242 pages. Frontis illustration. Appendix. End Notes. Bibliography. Index. Signed by the author on the half-title page. Minor wear and soiling to cover. In the 48 years that Tom Walker has resided in Alaska, he has worked as a conserv…ation officer, wilderness guide, wildlife technician, log home builder, documentary film advisor, and adjunct professor of journalism at the Homer Branch, University of Alaska, Anchorage. Tom Walker, a full-time freelance writer and photographer specializing in natural history and wildlife, is regarded as one of Alaska's premier nature photographers. His publication credits include Alaska Magazine, Field and Stream, Outdoor Life, Newsweek, Audubon, Sierra, Natural History, National Wildlife, Ranger Rick Magazine, Wilderness, numerous national, local, and international publications. Walker's books include: KANTISHNA MUSHERS, MINERS, MOUNTAINEERS; BUILDING THE ALASKA LOG HOME; SHADOWS ON THE TUNDRA; DENALI JOURNAL; WILD CRITTERS; RIVER OF BEARS; ALASKA'S WILDLIFE; PORTRAIT OF ALASKA'S WILDLIFE; ALASKA'S MAMMALS; ALASKA'S BEARS; and CARIBOU:WANDERER OF THE TUNDRA, which won the 2000 BENJAMIN FRANKLIN BOOK AWARD in the category of Nature and Environment. His new book, THE SEVENTYMILE KID, was published in 2013 and won the coveted Alaska Historian of the Year award. Many of Walker's photographs have won local, national, and international competitions. In the aftermath of the 1898 Klondike gold rush, hardy pioneers forged through trackless wilderness on foot or by dog team to prospect every remote drainage in Interior Alaska. A chance discovery of gold in the Kantishna hills in 1905 sparked a wild stampede for riches. The rush to the Mt. McKinley region lured hundreds of people. The Kantishna is rife with stories of courage, loyalty and challenges met head-on. Bouts with wild beasts, isolation, disease, accidents and cosmic cold. Here to are darker tales.of armed robbery, attempted murder, suicide and insanity. Market hunters slaughtered the wildlife. Unscrupulous trappers poisoned animals for their fur. Mt. McKinley drew adventurers of another sort. For a decade a few eastern sportsmen and sourdoughs challenged the icy slopes. The stories of defeat and deception set the stage in 1913 for the ultimate triumph. Out of the detritus of the great Alaska/Yukon gold rushes emerged two men of a different stripe. Men of adventure and vision, rising above the lust for gold, proposed a national park where wildlife would be free of the epic slaughter that accompanied America s northern expansion. Carving a national park out of this wilderness would not be easy. Alaskans would fight to protect their way of life. Here are the stories of these tough pioneers, tales similar to those that inspired Robert Service and Jack London.only these stories are true. Mat Unterberger (Frontis Illustration) and Tom Wal (illustrator).

In den WarenkorbHardcover. Zustand: Good. Zustand des Schutzumschlags: Fair. xvii, [3], 319, [1] pages. Endpaper map. Frontis Illustration. With photographs, diagrams, and maps. Footnotes. Index. DJ, price clipped, in a plastic sleeve, has wear, tears, soiling and chips. Foreword by Lieutenant-General Sir Sydney Rowell, Former Chief of the Aust…ralian General Staff. The Kokoda Track campaign or Kokoda Trail campaign was part of the Pacific War of World War II. The campaign consisted of a series of battles fought between July and November 1942 in what was then the Australian Territory of Papua. It was primarily a land battle, between the Japanese South Seas Detachment under Major General Tomitar Horii and Australian and Papuan land forces under command of New Guinea Force. The Japanese objective was to seize Port Moresby by an overland advance from the north coast, following the Kokoda Track over the mountains of the Owen Stanley Range, as part of a strategy to isolate Australia from the United States. Japanese forces landed and established beachheads near Gona and Buna on 21 July 1942. Opposed by Maroubra Force, then consisting of four platoons of the 39th Battalion and elements of the Papuan Infantry Battalion, they quickly advanced and captured Kokoda and its strategically vital airfield on 29 July. The Australian forces were continually pushed back. The veteran Second Australian Imperial Force (AIF) 21st Brigade narrowly avoided capture in the Battle of Mission Ridge - Brigade Hill from 6 to 8 September. In the Battle of Ioribaiwa from 13 to 16 September, the 25th Brigade under Brigadier Kenneth Eather fought the Japanese to a halt but ceded the field to the Japanese, withdrawing to Imita Ridge. The Japanese advanced to within sight of Port Moresby but withdrew on 26 September. They had outrun their supply line and had been ordered to withdraw in consequence of reverses suffered at Guadalcanal. Following the unopposed recapture of Kokoda, a major battle was fought around Oivi and Gorari from 4 to 11 November, resulting in a victory for the Australians. By 16 November, two brigades of the Australian 7th Division had crossed the Kumusi River at Wairopi, and advanced on the Japanese beachheads in a joint Australian and United States operation. The Japanese forces at Buna-Gona held out until 22 January 1943. The lessons learned during the course of this campaign and the subsequent battle of Buna-Gona led to widespread changes in doctrine, training, equipment and structure, with a legacy that remains until the present day. In consequence of the rapid Japanese advance and the perceived failure to quickly counterattack, a "crisis of command" resulted in the sackings of three high-ranking Australian officers. The Kokoda Track campaign has been mythologized as Australia's Thermopylae and incorporated into the Anzac legend even though the premise of a vastly numerically-superior enemy has since been shown to be incorrect. Third printing [stated]. Contains a minor correction from the first printing -see page ix. Ivor Hele (frontis illustration) (illustrator).
