Folio (230 x 340 mm). 329 ff. Karshuni Arabic in Serto Syriac script on watermarked laid paper; important words and phrases supplied in red throughout. Contemporary red leather binding ruled, enclosing a lozenge and tooled in blind with four rosettes arranged as a Greek cross; spine blind-tooled. Very rare and substantial Karshuni manuscript of "Qalaid al-Yaqut fi Wajibat al-Kahanut" ("Ruby Necklaces on the Duties of the Priesthood"), the Arabic version prepared by the French Jesuit Pierre Fromage (1678-1740) from the fourth volume of Luis de la Puente's "De la Perfeccion Cristiana", first published in 1616. - Written in Arabic but entirely in the West Syriac Serto script, the volume belongs to the Karshuni/Garshuni manuscript tradition, in which Arabic-language Christian texts were preserved and transmitted through Syriac letterforms. In this instance, the transmission process is layered, as it starts with a Spanish Jesuit ascetic and pastoral treatise here rendered into Arabic by a French missionary in Ottoman Aleppo, and subsequently recopied for readers brought up within the Syriac scribal culture. An ownership inscription dated to 6 October 1852 records in fact that the work once belonged to Priest Phillipos ibn Antoun, of Mardin, a student at the Monastery of Our Lady of Deliverance El Cherfeh, Mount Keserwan, Lebanon. - The prefatory notice records that the Arabic translation was completed at Aleppo in 1730, followed by a detailed table of contents occupying ff. 3v-7v. The seven sections of the work address the dignity and holiness of the priestly vocation, the sacrifice of the Mass, canonical prayer, the care of souls, confession, teaching, preaching, and the episcopal office. Numerous biblical references are entered in the margins, while the extensive rubrication marks article and chapter openings, emphasizing central passages in a remarkably neat hand. - This manuscript stands as a vivid testament to the dynamic movement of ideas across linguistic, cultural, and confessional boundaries, illustrating how early modern Jesuit pastoral literature was not only transmitted but actively received and preserved within Arabic-speaking Syriac Christian communities. - Lacking the last folio. Binding worn with professional repairs to lower cover and light dampstaining to text near the end. Generally a clean copy. - 1) With ownership inscription of "Priest Phillipos, son of Antoun, of Mardin, a student of the Monastery of Our Lady of Deliverance El Cherfeh, Daroun, Mount Keserwan, Lebanon", dated 6 October 1852, with his seal. - 2) Cancelled Karshuni inscription dated 1265 H (1848/49 CE). - 3) Preserved with an undated Ottoman Turkish document recording a commercial transaction involving two kile of wheat, one kile of barley, and the grocer Dervish Aga. - 4) With a New Year 2000 bookmark from Manasseh, a Lebanese luxury retailer. - 5) AZCA Auctions, 2026. - De Backer/Sommervogel VI, 1286; III, 1040, 11 ("Traité du Sacerdoce et de l'Episcopat").
