The dust jacket has wear, tears, chips and soiling. Stamp of previous owner on DJ and fep. Fritz Willis (19071979) was a prominent American commercial illustrator and painter. He is widely celebrated as one of the last great masters of the classic mid-century American pin-up genre. Trained at the Vesper George Art School in Boston, Willis flirted with Hollywood, landing minor acting roles, before his true passion for art took center stage. Settling in California, he honed his craft at Warner Brothers, designing publicity materials and set compositions, where he forged a creative partnership with fellow artist Joe DeMers. Together, they launched a series of pin-ups for Esquire magazine's "Gallery of Glamour" in 1946, marking Willis's ascent as a master of the genre. Over a career spanning more than 30 years, Willis shaped the visual landscape of post-war advertising and magazine illustration. Willis handled ad work for Pepsi, Quality Papers, Max Factor, Purex, Sunkist, Crown Zellerbach, SpringMaid Sheets and others. He also did story work for Esquire, Saturday Evening Post, Redbook, Collier's, and covers for Ice Follies programs from 1952-1969. At least one movie poster, "On Our Merry Way." An author himself, he wrote instruction books for Walter Foster (Art Secrets and Shotcuts, The Nude, Faces and Features, The Model, and a number of children's books (Cancan, Jelly and George, Muffin, Me Too, Amber - the Story of a Good Little Dog). His 15-year stint of Artists's Sketchbook and other calendars for Brown & Bigelow made him a pin-up great. The book centers on a beloved dog named Amber. The narrative unfolds as Amber embarks on a personal journey to discover her unique purpose and find her true place in the wider world. The defining trait of the publication is its artwork. Fritz Willis, who later gained immense fame for his stylized pin-up illustrations and mid-century advertising work, hand-drew all the illustrations. The book features warm, highly stylized sepia-toned vintage illustrations that give it a distinctive 1940s animation-studio aesthetic. A rare early example of the evolving Fritz Willis style.
