Sternberg (1895-1963) war ein jüdischer, deutsch-amerikanischer Ökonom, Politiker und Soziologe marxistischer Prägung. Während der Novemberrevolution 1918/19 war er Mitglied des Soldatenrates seiner Heimatstadt Breslau. Er hatte. Kontakte zu vielen unterschiedlichen marxistischen Kreisen und Persönlichkeiten, aber auch zu Künstlern und Dichtern wie George Grosz, Bertolt Brecht oder Lion Feuchtwanger. Von 1930-33 erschienen auch regelmäßig Artikel von ihm in der Zeitschrift "Die Weltbühne". Sternberg reiste zweimal in die Sowjetunion, wo er u.a. mit Karl Radek, Eugen Varga und Nikolai Bucharin diskutierte, seine dortigen Erfahrungen aber auch seine Kritik am Stalinismus verstärkten. 1933 traf er auch mit Trotzki in Paris zusammen. Nach dem Reichstagsbrand tauchte er unter und flüchtete über die Tschechoslowakei in die Schweiz, dort wurde er 1936 aber ausgewiesen.
