Hardcover. Zustand: New. 1st Edition. Contents: 1. Introduction to Mountains. 2. Origins of Mountains. 3. Mountain Climate. 4. Snow, Ice, Avalanches and Glaciers. 5. Mountain Landforms and Geomorphic Processes. 6. Mountain Soils. 7. Mountain Vegetation. 8. Mountain Wildlife.9. Attitudes Toward Mountains. 10. People in the Mounta…ins. 11. Agricultural Settlement and Land Use in Mountains. 12. Sustainable Mountain Development. Mountains cover a quarter of the Earth s land surface and a quarter of the global population lives in or adjacent to these areas. The global importance of mountains is recognized particularly because they provide critical resources, such as water, food and wood; contain high levels of biological and cultural diversity; attract humans as places for tourism and recreation; and in many cultures are instilled with sacred significance. This major revision of Larry Price s book Mountains and Man (1981) is both timely and highly appropriate. The past three decades have been a period of remarkable progress in our understanding of mountains from an academic point of view. Of even greater importance is that society at large now realizes that mountains and the people who reside in them are not isolated from the main stream of world affairs, but are vital if we are to achieve an environmentally sustainable future.

Stated "first edition" on copyright page. Solid text block. Blemish to front cover, light dust remnant along top edge of text block. Marbled end…papers. From a limited edition of 200 copies, this being number 112, signed by Lady Bird Johnson on the limitation page. Additional inscription on the half title: "For Tommy Corcoran - who shared these wonderful years - and so many more - a friend for all seasons. Devotedly, Lady Bird Johnson. Merry Christmas! 1970." An exceptional association copy. Thomas G. Corcoran (1900-1981) was a principal strategist of Franklin Roosevelt's New Deal, shaping historic legislation such as the Securities Act of 1933, the Securities Exchange Act of 1934 and the Fair Labor Standards Act of 1938. Along with Benjamin V. Cohen, he created the Securities and Exchange Commission and worked unsuccessfully to "pack" the Supreme Court in 1937. He left the Roosevelt administration after the second term, becoming one of the first modern day political lobbyists. As a lobbyist, he helped his friend, Lady Bird Johnson, gain FCC approval for her purchase of a radio station in Austin, Texas. He also ensured the election of Lyndon Johnson to the Senate in 1948, by using his influence over the Supreme Court to clear Johnson of charges of election fraud in his campaign for the Democratic nomination in Texas. The Johnsons owed much of their personal and political fortunes to the recipient of this book. Signed limited edition of A White House Diary by Lady Bird Johnson, inscribed to Thomas G. Corcoran, advisor to President Franklin Roosevelt, architect of the New Deal and a friend to the Johnsons. (illustrator). Signed.

Aged, and with slight damage to two words of text caused by removal from mount. At the time of writing Faucit's successful career had been interrupted by the recurrence of a lung condition, necessitating recuperation at a seaside resort. She has evidently a…sked Talfourd to contribute to an autograph album, soliciting the following response: 'Mr. Serjeant Talfourd presents his best compliments to Miss Helen Faucit and has endeavoured to comply with her flattering wish by adding to her collection of admiring tributes some poor verses which express sincere wishes; - and only regrets that her present state of health should impart more earnestness to these wishes than consists with entire pleasure in expressing them. He trusts, however, that he shall very soon have the satisfaction of knowing that in her perfect restoration to health his wishes and those of all who know her are fulfilled.'.

Solid binding, extremities lightly rubbed, small chip to upper spine end. Mild foxing throughout, moderate toning to the two illustrated plates. Inscr…ibed by one of the authors on the front free endpaper: "To the Revd Mr. Picton / from his friend / E.D. Mansfield." (Howes D458) (Sabin 20813) (Thomson 339) (American Imprints 28729) An attractive copy of this early descriptive text of Cincinnati, rarely seen with author's signature. Benjamin Drake and Edward D. Mansfield were both lawyers at the time they wrote Cincinnati in 1826. Their detailed account of Cincinnati became an important guide to emigrants and contributed to the city's rapid growth, making it one of the 10 largest cities in the US by 1830. The recipient of this copy, Reverend Thomas Picton, was chaplain and professor of ethics at West Point from 1818 to 1825. With his father being a professor at West Point, Mansfield graduated from there in 1819. In his book, Personal Memories: Social, Political, and Literary (1879), Mansfield describes the Rev. Mr. Picton as "one of my earliest and best friends." (page 88). First edition of Cincinnati in 1826 by Benjamin Drake and Edward D. Mansfield, inscribed by Mansfield to his longtime friend, Reverend Thomas Picton. (illustrator). Signed.

In den WarenkorbThe background to this document is ably explained in an article in the Spectator, 27 December 1834, 'The Spy System: Richmond versus Marshall and Miles', which begins: 'The Court of Exchequer was occupied the whole of Saturday and Monday last with the trial of an action of libel, brought by Alexander Baillie Richmond, the indivi…dual for many years known in Scotland by the title of "Richmond the Spy," against Messrs. Simpkin and Marshall, the London publishers of Tait's Edinburgh Magazine. The plaintiff maintained that his character had been seriously damaged by some articles in the Magazine, entitled "The Spy System, or, 'tis Thirteen Years since."' The trial, in which a number of the witnesses for the defendants, 'mostly men in humble life', delivered their evidence 'in many passages resembling the Scottish dialogues in the Waverley Novels', ended with Richmond being nonsuited. 1p., 8vo. In good condition, on lightly aged and worn paper, watermarked 'W KING | 1834'. The page is headed '12. T' and contains nineteen lines of text, with deletions and emendations, beginning: '[.] incapable of being served with the compulsory notice of this court or of quitting their duties? Is not the conclusion obvious? But that is not all - Even the publication of 1832 is not the first publication on the subject of Mr. Richmond's exploits; nor is the author of that publication the person against whom Mr. Richmond has most cause to complain.'.

In den Warenkorb2pp., 12mo. Bifolium. In good condition, lightly aged. A charming letter, the subject of which is an anecdote told by Augustus Hare in his autobiography relating to Samuel Smith, Dean of Christ Church, which was considered 'defamatory' by Smith's relation Harington, and gave offence to his family. (A letter of Hare's to Haringto…n, with two draft letters from Harington, are offered separately.) Bayne writes: 'My dear Harington, | The decades were merely rough divisions: one man who told me the story with Dean Smith's name attached took his Degree in the thirties; another knew the story but without any name, & took his Degree in the forties; you and I who used to hear it of Dr Barnes took ours in the fifties. If you had asked me two years ago, I shd. have applied to two great friends of my Father who took their Degree in the twenties and remembered the Statue of Mercury in the middle of the Great Quadrangle; but they are now both dead. They wd. perhaps have told it of Dean Hall.'.

In den WarenkorbAccording to his entry in the Oxford DNB, 'In 1844 Lover abandoned miniature painting as a result of failing eyesight but continued to paint and exhibit landscapes. He invented a new form of entertainment which he called Irish Evenings, a monologue of songs, recitations, and stories, all of his own composition. These he performe…d at the Princess's Concert Rooms, London.' Between 1846 and 1848 he toured North America with great success. 3pp, 12mo. Bifolium. In good condition, lightly aged, with minor traces of mount adhering to blank reverse of second leaf. Folded twice. The letter begins: 'Mr. Lover, with much respect and sincere thanks to Sir Thomas & Lady Cullum for the honor they so kindly propose to him, regrets that the shortness of his stay and urgency of his occupation interfere to prevent his enjoying the pleasure which the acceptance of Sir Thomas and Lady Cullum's invitation would cause him.' He explains that he has sung 'at Hanover Square Rooms on Monday at Cambridge last night and, after travelling to-day and his exertion of this evening, with an early entertaintment [sic] tomorrow, before him an immediate retirement to rest after this evenings exertion is indispensible'. Consequently he must 'content himself with the Hotel of Bury instead of enjoying the honor of the hospitality of Hardwicke [sic]'. He hopes that 'Sir Thomas will assure Mr. [Petre?] how sensible Mr Lover is of the honor of his invitation, but as Mr. Lover, is obliged on his days of public engagement to dine very early, and very sparingly, he cannot have the pleasure of being made Mr. [Petre's?] guest'.
