For the true details, see Gentleman's Magazine, January 1800. 1p, 8vo. Bifolium. In fair condition, aged and worn, with thin strip of paper adhering to the blank reverse of the second leaf, which is… addressed, with fragment of seal in black wax, to 'Mr Charles Taylor | 134 | Cheapside'. The recipient may well be Charles Taylor (d.1816), physician, originally a Manchester calico printer and dyer, who later became Secretary of the Society of Arts, London. Folded four times. Reads: 'Dear Mr Taylor | When I last saw you, I was the happiest man, in an amiable Son Dr John; whom it has pleased Divine Wisdom, to take from me this day, and thus inflict upon me the severest dispensation I ever experienced, and which confines me this week within the House, whilst you have the sincerest wishes of yours resply | J. C Lettsom'. From the distinguished autograph collection of the psychiatrist Richard Alfred Hunter (1923-1981), whose collection of 7000 works relating to psychiatry is now in Cambridge University Library. Hunter and his mother Ida Macalpine had a particular interest in the illness of King George III, and their book 'George III and the Mad Business' (1969) suggested the diagnosis of porphyria popularised by Alan Bennett in his play 'The Madness of George III'.

The leaves of both have been separated, but comparison with other copies confirms that they are both complete, and otherwise in good condition, with slight wear, and the two leaves of the second item laid down on a piece… of paper. ONE: By 'J. M. G.' Title-page: 'The Old Oaken Chair: | Addressed to | Different Members of his Family. | By J. M. G.' 8pp., 12mo. A neat production, originally on two bifoliums. Gutch's name completed in pencil on title-page, with note: 'Only 12 printed'. Prefatory note: 'WRITTEN in my 76th year, upon receiving from my Brother, GEORGE GUTCH, an OAKEN CHAIR, as a companion to a curiously carved LIBRARY TABLE he had previously sent me.' The poem, in blank verse, covers pp.5-8, and begins: 'OLD OAKEN CHAIR! I love thy antique form, | Thou bring'st to my remembrance the review | Of by-gone days and scenes; - the love I bear | To him, who sent another gift to suit | This room, the shelves of which contain | Volumes of early lore, of poetry divine; | Of that which helps to meditation, | And recalls the mind from earth to heav'n.' The poem refers to the loss of a parent (his wife?), 'kind Mary Anne'. The latter part of the poem concerns the travels in the Aegean of his son J. W. G. Gutch, with six footnotes, the first two reading: 'My son, a Queen's Foreign Messenger, was at this period sent with despatches to Sir William Parker and Mr. Wyse, respecting the settlement of the affairs of Greece.' and 'After delivering the despatches, he was permitted to land at Athens, and had sufficient time and opportunity to visit the celebrated classical scenes which surround the city.' The letter begins: 'My dear Loch | Some friends of mine from the Country are desirous of seeing Lord Stafford's & Lord Grosvenor's pictures some time… next week; & they understand that the obtaining of Tickets is not a matter of course but that some little interest is necessary.' He asks for assistance 'with regard to Cleveland House [.] for Mrs Johnston & party (about 5 or 6 persons)'. He is going 'to the Cambridge Election' on the following day, and thinks that it will be 'very keenly contested'. On his return he hopes 'to attend the Council of the London University', when he hopes 'that Horner's business will be finally & satisfactorily settled'. He has heard 'nothing more about Silk Gowns', but 'Willy Brougham [.] persists in retaining his appointment and will not be scared into resignation, like Plunkett, by the Chancery Lawyers.' In the last paragraph he deprecates the news that 'Lord Exeter is to have one of the blue Ribbands, though he is no friend of Canning's, & indeed closely connected with the high Tory opposition'. This is, in his view, 'one among many instances of C's weakness, & entire dependence upon the higher power.' There is no mention of Loch in Lady Seymour's 'The "Pope" of Holland House, Selections from the Correspondence of John Whishaw and his Friends, 1813-1840' (1906), and the year 1827 is skirted over.
