The Legend of Pope Joan, a female pope of the ninth century, has survived since the early thirteenth century. Joan was said to disguise herself as a man and traveled to Rome where she become well known and respected for her erudition, and elected to succeed Leo IV. She was ultimately killed or died after giving birth to a child which proved she was a female. Spanheim (1600-1649) was a professor of theology in Leiden where he became one of the prominent defenders of the Calvinistic doctrine. During the Reformation the Catholic Church attempted to dismantle the legend and reformists used the existence of a female pope as argument against Catholic doctrine and the papacy. He attended Heidelberg University and then went to Geneva to study theology. In 1642 he became Professor of Theology at Leiden. This work gives an account of the Thirty Years War after the intervention of the Swedish king Gustavus Adolphus.The work was first printed at Geneva in 1633 and appears to have only appeared in French. There were a number of editions in 1633, the one offered here has no publisher's name or place of printing and is the same as the edition at Lambeth Palace.

El autor Friedrich de Spanheim (1632 - 1701) fue primer profesor de historia clásica en la Universidad de Leyde, así como su bibliocecario y rector. La obra fue traducida al francés por Jacques Lenfant y dedicada al hermano del autor Ezequiele Spanheim, Ministro del Estado de Banderburgo. Sea verdad o ficción la historia de la Papesa Juana, lo cierto es que el autor consulta y reseña gran número de documentos. Especialmente significativa es la lámina, unica plegada, del parto de la Papesa en plena acción de Letanias y Plegarias durante la fiesta de los romanos llaman Ambarualia, en la solemne procesión. A la vez, J. Gay, en su obra Iconographie des estampes a sujets Galants, Genève, 1868, ya cataloga a un xilografo alemán, que trabajó en Paris en 1520, que realizo una xilografía que lleva por título: 'La Papesse Jeanne accouchant pendant une procession solennelle.' Y firmada con las iniciales J.K, pertenecientes a Jacob Kerver. En España llegó muy posteriormente una traducción, resumida y en versom ver Palau 125553, que lleva por título: Juana la Papesa. Novela histórica en verso por J.H.O.- San Sebastián, A.B. de Martinez, 1843, 130 páginas, 16º. Evidentemente fue prohibida al momento y se mandó retirar toda la edición, siendo los ejemplares rarísimos. No en Brunet, Gresse, J. Gay, Quérard.
