Hardcover. Zustand: New. 1st Edition. First edition, first and only printing. Signed in black ink on the half-title page by Friedlander. Hardcover. This first edition was limited to 2000 copies. Out of print. Lee Friedlander's work is widely known for transforming our visual understanding of contemporary American culture. Known for passionately embracing all subject matter, Friedlander photographed nearly every facet of American life from the 1950s to the present. From factories in Pennsylvania, to the jazz scene in New Orleans, to the deserts of the Southwest, Friedlander's complex formal visual strategies continue to influence the way we understand, analyze, and experience modern American experience. Friedlander's work continues to influence photographic practice internationally, in part due to the heightened sense of self-awareness that is a trademark of so many of his photographs and in part because of his ability to embrace wide-ranging subject matter, always interpreting it in an elegance that hadn't existed prior to his work. New in publisher's shrink-wrap (slit open for signature). From the Introduction by Peter Galassi: "Photography likes sculpture. It likes to see how things look from different angles, especially things that don't move. It likes light falling on surfaces and the way the two become one in the picture. . . Above all, it likes the way photography, which makes living figures still, awakens figures frozen in stone." From the publisher: "The Staglieno cemetery near Genoa was created in the 19th century. It is home not only to those whose bones lie buried beneath, but also to the splendidly ornate display of sculptures erected in their memory. Carved from inanimate lumps of stone, these memorials have become more than the monumental tributes they were originally commissioned to be. Now feathered with a gentle coat of dust, each appears to have taken on a life of its own and out of the melancholy of death comes the comforting notion of a presence that will remain. This series of photographs by the inestimable Lee Friedlander will certainly delight with its beauty; it may also surprise with its warmth, and its sense of immortality. Superbly printed in duotone on matte art paper, and bound in rich velvet, Staglieno is published in an edition of 2,000 copies. Introduction by Peter Galassi, Chief Curator, Department of Photography, The Museum of Modern Art, New York." Signed by Author.

The second edition includes a new essay by eminent photography curator and Friedlander scholar, Peter Galassi, which illuminates the history and continued significance of this publication. This album by Lee Friedlander is a memorial in photographs to the American monument. The photographs were selected from several thousand negatives and more than a thousand prints the photographer made of the subject during a dozen years while traveling throughout the United States. The curator John Szarkowski stated: 'I am still astonished and heartened by the deep affection of those pictures, by the photographer's tolerant equanimity in the face of the facts, by the generosity of spirit, the freedom from pomposity and rhetoric. One might call this work an act of high artistic patriotism, an achievement that might help us reclaim that word from ideologues and expediters.".

Quer-4°, 480 S. zahlr. meist ganzs. Abb., Broschur, Tadell. EA. B. American Musicians, 1998). Viel Aufmerksamkeit erhielt Friedlanders Opus At Work. Er unterrichtete u. a. an der University of Minnesota. 1999 wurde er in die American Academy of Arts and Sciences gewählt. Seit 2007 ist er gewähltes Mitglied der American Philosophical Society. 3500 gr. Schlagworte: Photographie.

Published on the occasion of the 2005 major retrospective exhibition "Friedlander" at The Museum of Modern Art, New York. Lee Friedlander's work is widely known for transforming our visual understanding of contemporary American culture. Known for passionately embracing all subject matter, Friedlander photographed nearly every facet of American life from the 1950s to the present. As New in New (from Friedlander's personal archive). A Mint copy. From the publisher: "Lee Friedlander is one of the most important of the 1960s generation of photographers for whom the posture of disinterested objectivity served as a vehicle for passionate personal inquiries. His large body of work-he most often produces extended series of pictures on a chosen theme, then publishes them in book form-is broad in subject matter and supple and complex in style, and focuses on what he calls America's 'social landscape.' At the same time, he has pursued a playful dialogue with artistic tradition-as though open-eyed curiosity about the world, and a sophisticated taste for the wiles of picture-making were one and the same thing. Lee Friedlander takes a deep critical look at Friedlander's abundantly productive career. Including over 500 photographs grouped by series, and an incisive essay by Peter Galassi, Chief Curator of Photography at The Museum of Modern Art, this oversized publication is the most comprehensive review of the photographer's career to date."
